Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Human Resources, the Director of Employee and Labour Relations is responsible for the strategic planning, development, and execution of employee and labour relations initiatives. This role aims to cultivate effective, fair, and respectful relationships between the institution and its workforce, ensuring a positive and productive workplace environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice and coaching to management and stakeholders to address workplace challenges and enhance decision-making capabilities.
- Serve as the primary liaison for union relations, engaging with union leadership to foster collaboration.
- Design and implement training programs focused on employee and labour relations to promote equitable practices and effective problem-solving.
- Offer advanced guidance on labour relations matters, including collective agreement interpretations and bargaining strategies.
- Manage grievances and arbitration processes, providing senior-level support in labour/management relations.
- Facilitate dispute resolution processes to effectively address complaints and grievances.
- Conduct thorough investigations into workplace misconduct and harassment allegations.
- Oversee the HR advising and consulting services, ensuring high-quality support for management and staff.
- Exhibit strategic thinking and a collaborative approach, recognized as a responsive leader who builds strong relationships across diverse teams.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Social Sciences, Psychology, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of nine years of progressive leadership experience in Employee and Labour Relations.
- Possession of an HR Professional designation (CHRE, CHRL, or CHRP) is required.
- Strategic Leadership Certification or training in Alternative Dispute Resolution is advantageous.
- Extensive experience with collective agreements and grievance management, preferably in the post-secondary education sector or public sector.
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation and collective agreements affecting employee and labour relations.
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic HR functions.
- A collaborative leader skilled in coaching and mentoring to support employee development.
- Expertise in dispute resolution and conflict management.
- Highly organized project manager capable of handling multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- A broad understanding of all facets of Human Resources Management.
- Proven skills in financial administration, strategic planning, and project management.
- Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, and a commitment to confidentiality.
