This initiative aims to empower individuals and families in making informed and productive choices regarding education, training, careers, employment, labor, child development, languages, culture, and heritage.

Job Overview

The Cultural Resource Assessment Specialist is situated in Yellowknife and plays a crucial role within the Cultural Places Program (CPP) under the Culture and Heritage Division of the Department of Education, Culture, and Employment (ECE). This position reports directly to the Territorial Archaeologist.

The specialist is responsible for evaluating land use permit applications and other land authorizations, providing informed recommendations to land management agencies regarding the safeguarding of archaeological sites that may be threatened by development activities. This role necessitates a thorough review of archaeological overview assessments and archaeological impact assessments, advising archaeologists and their clients on effective management strategies for archaeological sites.

The incumbent will design and execute archaeological field projects in collaboration with communities across the Northwest Territories, enhancing the understanding of the region's archaeological heritage. This position requires travel for fieldwork purposes. In both field and community environments, the specialist must engage in cross-cultural interactions, necessitating a strong emphasis on culturally sensitive behavior and practices.

The qualifications typically required for this role include:
A Master of Arts or Master of Science in anthropology (with a focus on archaeology) or archaeology, along with three (3) years of relevant experience in cultural resource management and/or archaeological research. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.
