Job Summary

Varsteel LTD is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shipper Dispatcher to join our team. As a key member of our logistics department, you will be responsible for coordinating and executing the movement of freight, ensuring timely and efficient delivery to our customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and build delivery runs to ensure maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Receive, coordinate, and prioritize additional delivery requests from sales or management, ensuring timely delivery and accuracy.
  • Direct activities related to dispatching, routing, and tracking of Varsteel trucks.
  • Effective and professional communication with drivers and carriers, serving as the primary point of contact.
  • Update managers and maintain accurate and up-to-date information on dispatch activities and shipment statuses.
  • Plan, direct, and maintain the maintenance and repair of the fleet operation (tractors and trailers) owned by Varsteel.
  • Monitor repairs submitted by drivers and ensure all equipment is well maintained.
  • Resolve conflicts and address sales staff or customer concerns with deliveries.
  • Proactively identify and address scheduling conflicts or issues that may arise during the dispatch process.
  • Work closely with managers to optimize the efficiency of the dispatch process.
Requirements
  • Computer-savvy with high proficiency in basic computer programs (Microsoft Office).
  • Working knowledge of logistics GPS systems, geography, and aptitude to learn new software systems.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions responding effectively to challenges, often under stress and with limited information.
  • Highly developed communication, organization, and critical thinking skills.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to accuracy and efficiency in operations.
  • Effective time management – ability to manage self, time, and balance multiple priorities and plan effectively.
  • Ability to remain focused, positive, and navigate stressful situations.
  • Proactive individual who can hold themselves accountable for their actions and for producing expected results.
Qualifications/Experience
  • Previous experience in transportation/logistics/dispatching or a combination of transferable skills and experience.
  • Experience in equipment maintenance.
  • Customer service experience and possess professional phone mannerisms.
  • Previous experience in office administration.
  • Excellent knowledge of Calgary & Alberta highway networks and understanding of the geography.
