About the Position:

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the BC SPCA. As a key member of our shelter operations team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care and support to the animals in our shelter.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assume a leadership role in designated areas of the shelter, including dogs, cats, and cruelty investigations.
  • Oversee the activities of animal care attendants and volunteers, ensuring that training has been provided and proper procedures are being followed.
  • Recruit, select, schedule, and manage volunteers in designated areas, utilizing volunteer management software.
  • Maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers regarding daily operations and tasks.
  • Ensure the shelter is maintained in a clean, sanitary, and efficient manner.
  • Monitor animal health and welfare through kennel cards, whiteboards, and daily logs.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to the public, responding to inquiries and providing information on animal care and adoption.
  • Assist with adoptions, redemptions, and intake of animals, ensuring all procedures are conducted according to policy and meet customer needs.
  • Support and implement BC SPCA provincial initiatives and adhere to operational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in local and provincial fundraising initiatives.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
  • Review inventory of shelter supplies, ensuring timely ordering and maintenance.
  • Operate the Animal Centre vehicle, transporting animals to and from the veterinarian clinic, and maintaining vehicle cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to enhance animal health and welfare and create a harmonious team environment.
  • Participate in meetings to share ideas and suggestions for improving the enjoyment of working for the BC SPCA and increasing productivity.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver's license
  • Sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases
  • Previous kennel or animal care experience an asset
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
  • Ability to work with staff, volunteers, and the public in a positive, practical manner, with minimal supervision
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills for front desk duties, including answering emails and updating animal records
  • Position requires physical demands, including heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling, requiring a level of fitness and endurance
  • Minimum one year animal care experience with the BC SPCA or related agency preferred
  • Completion of BC SPCA courses, including Introduction and Overview, Animal Management 1, and ShelterBuddy, upon hire or within six months
