The Newcastle Genetics Laboratory is an integral part of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub, collaborating with esteemed partners. We are currently seeking dedicated Clinical Scientists to enhance our supportive laboratory teams. This is a pivotal moment in the field of genomics, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to advancements that improve patient outcomes.
Ideal candidates should possess State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council or be prepared to obtain it within the first year of employment. Full registration is necessary for complete integration into the Band 7 role. Applicants with significant laboratory and analytical experience in diagnostic genetics, or those holding an MSc or PhD in Genetics, are encouraged to apply.
Successful candidates who are not yet registered will be expected to pursue HCPC registration and will receive a proportionate salary during their training period.
Key Responsibilities
Our laboratory provides testing for a diverse range of inherited and acquired conditions, serving a local population exceeding three million, as well as offering specialized services nationally and internationally. The Newcastle Genetics Laboratory is situated in a state-of-the-art facility and collaborates closely with prominent academic groups within the Institute of Genetic Medicine.
The successful candidate will be a proactive and dependable professional, joining a team of approximately 90 scientific and technical staff. Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating testing for various genetic conditions.
- Preparing detailed reports and maintaining close communication with clinical colleagues and Genetic Technologist staff.
- Demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of diagnostic genetics.
- Exhibiting strong communication, teamwork, and supervisory skills.

Qualifications and Skills Required
Essential Knowledge
- Strong understanding of the scientific and clinical aspects of the disorders tested in the laboratory.
Essential Skills
- Proficient laboratory bench skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
- Basic computer proficiency.
Essential Experience
- Prior experience as a pre-registration scientist in a diagnostic cytogenetics and/or molecular genetics laboratory.
Essential Qualifications
- A first or second class BSc degree in a relevant subject with a strong genetics focus.
- State registration as a clinical scientist in Genetics with the Health and Care Professions Council (Masters Degree equivalence).
