Job Overview

The Newcastle Genetics Laboratory is a key component of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub, collaborating with esteemed partners in the region. We are currently seeking dedicated Clinical Scientists to enhance our dynamic laboratory teams. This role presents a unique opportunity to engage in the evolving field of genomics, contributing significantly to patient care and outcomes.

Ideal candidates will possess State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council or be on track to achieve this within their first year. State Registration is essential for full integration into the Band 7 role, with provisional appointments available for those awaiting registration. Direct experience in a diagnostic genetics service is highly desirable.

We welcome applications from individuals holding alternative qualifications, such as an MSc or PhD in Genetics, accompanied by substantial laboratory and analytical experience in a clinical environment. Successful candidates not yet registered will be expected to pursue HCPC registration, with remuneration adjusted accordingly during the training phase.

Key Responsibilities

Our laboratory provides comprehensive testing for a diverse range of inherited and acquired conditions, serving a local population exceeding three million, as well as offering specialized services nationally and internationally. The Newcastle Genetics Laboratory is situated in a state-of-the-art facility at the Institute of Genetic Medicine, closely linked with prominent academic research groups.

The successful applicant will be a proactive and dependable professional, joining a team of approximately 90 scientific and technical staff. Responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating testing for various genetic conditions.
  • Preparing detailed reports and collaborating with clinical colleagues and Genetic Technologists.
  • Providing specialist guidance on genetic testing to clinicians.
  • Supervising and training junior and trainee staff within the section.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • Strong understanding of the scientific and clinical aspects of the disorders tested.
  • Excellent laboratory skills and communication abilities.
  • Basic proficiency in computer applications.

Desirable

  • Experience in presenting scientific findings at meetings and conferences.
  • Significant background in diagnostic cytogenetics and/or molecular genetics.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A relevant BSc degree with a strong focus on genetics.
  • State registration as a clinical scientist in Genetics.

Desirable

  • Completion of clinical scientist training with certification from recognized bodies.
  • Postgraduate qualifications such as a Master's degree or PhD in a relevant field.
