The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled Legal Senior Counsel to join our team. As a key member of our Legal and Immigration Services (LIS) team, you will provide strategic legal guidance and support to senior leaders, faculties, and administrative units across the institution.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice on commercial issues, including contract negotiation, drafting, and review
  • Identify legal issues, risks, and develop strategies to mitigate legal risks
  • Research and provide updates on case law, legislative requirements, and legal trends affecting the University
  • Offer consultation and advice on intellectual property law to various stakeholders
  • Provide legal advice on privacy-related matters, including compliance and guidance, review and response to complaints and breaches, and risk identification and training
  • Advises on investigations related to University Policies and/or statutory obligations
  • Supports the development of precedents and workflow practices for routine matters
  • Advises on student accommodation issues, including responsibilities under the Human Rights Code
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent law degree
  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario and member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Relevant professional designation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals or other recognized body
  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing law and providing legal advice to complex organizations
  • 3+ years of experience working with access to information and protection of privacy
