About the Role

McLean Hospital is a leading psychiatric hospital dedicated to providing high-quality mental health services. As a Mental Health Specialist, you will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional patient care and contributing to a supportive therapeutic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and participate in therapeutic milieu under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Accurately and timely document patient information, progress notes, and observation sheets.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being.
  • Participate in patient rounds and teams to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Identify and address patient behaviors that may contribute to crisis situations, utilizing de-escalation techniques to promote a safe environment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams to ensure seamless care coordination.
  • Follow established standards of care and protocols to ensure patient safety and well-being.
  • Remain vigilant and alert at all times while on duty, prioritizing patient safety and security.
  • Perform Point of Care testing (POC) as required.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate in planning and implementation of patient groups and activities to promote engagement and socialization.
  • Provide and supervise recreation and off-hall activities to meet patient needs.
  • Offer direction, support, and supervision to patients as needed, promoting independence and self-care.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and organized unit environment, reporting any concerns or issues to the Unit Secretary or Nurse Director.
  • Identify and report equipment and housekeeping problems to ensure a clean and functional environment.
  • Participate in the unit's inventory system, reporting low supplies and contributing to efficient resource management.
  • Initiate activities that promote patient hygiene, nutrition, and overall well-being.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prefer two years of college plus one year of clinical experience, preferably in a psychiatric setting.
  • Verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Previous experience in direct patient care preferred.
