POSITION OVERVIEW: RAILCAR SURFACE PREPARATION SPECIALIST GATX Rail Canada is seeking dedicated individuals to fill several full-time roles as RAILCAR SURFACE PREPARATION SPECIALISTS at our railcar maintenance facility. In these positions, you will operate blasting equipment to eliminate paint, grime, scale, and other contaminants from both the interior and exterior of railcars and related components using abrasive steel grit. As a RAILCAR SURFACE PREPARATION SPECIALIST at GATX, you will join a diverse and inclusive team focused on delivering high-quality railcar maintenance while upholding the highest standards of workplace health and safety. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform sandblasting tasks on the interior and exterior surfaces of railcars prior to repainting.
  • Adjust blasting equipment and replace hoses and fittings as necessary.
  • Follow health and safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as protective clothing, helmets, goggles, and gloves.
  • Inspect the quality of work completed to ensure it meets GATX standards and is completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Promote health and safety awareness and suggest improvements to existing policies and programs when applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as repair manuals and work orders.
  • Capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and complete important tasks.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to complete assigned tasks within a reasonable timeframe.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to stoop for extended periods and transition between kneeling and standing positions.
  • Capability to perform overhead work for prolonged durations.
  • Ability to lift up to 85 pounds from ground level.
  • Ability to push or pull loads of up to 140 pounds.
  • Comfortable climbing ladders and working at heights.
  • Able to work in extreme temperature conditions.
  • Work environment may be loud to moderate; hearing protection is required.
  • Must be able to enter confined spaces and work in enclosed areas.

WORK SCHEDULE: Morning Shift: Monday to Friday: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM Afternoon Shift: Monday to Thursday: 2:30 PM - 1:00 AM
