Position Overview

:

The Director of Safety and Health plays a crucial role within the Senior Leadership Team, tasked with the responsibility of executing top-tier safety and health management systems, formulating essential initiatives, and enhancing the local Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) culture and performance.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and execute strategic, sustainable safety and health programs, tools, and initiatives that comply with client, provincial, and federal regulations. Work collaboratively with various Department Leaders (such as Project Directors, Commercial, Supply Chain, Engineering, etc.) to ensure that safety and health programs and initiatives are proactive, effective, and aligned with project objectives. Develop strong working relationships with Supply Chain members to promote proactive engagement, initiatives, and effective risk mitigation strategies. Analyze and interpret safety and health performance data, providing tailored, actionable solutions that align with this analysis and foster positive safety and health outcomes. Organize and implement strategic safety and health workshops, summits, and meetings across all levels of the Supply Chain. Assist in the formulation and execution of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to support both short- and long-term strategies, ensuring alignment with project goals and objectives. Engage in meetings with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to communicate specialized safety and health requirements that may impact project design, timelines, and costs. Collaborate with the Project Director, ES&H Manager, and Legal teams to address and resolve any pending agency non-compliances, notices of violations, potential fines, and other enforcement actions.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Significant experience managing large, complex infrastructure projects within Canada.

Level 1

A Bachelor's or Master's degree (or international equivalent) in environmental, safety, health, or a related scientific discipline, accompanied by 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.

Level 2

A Bachelor's or Master's degree (or international equivalent) in environmental, safety, health, or a related scientific discipline, with 15+ years of relevant experience or 19+ years of relevant work experience.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Proven ability to deliver innovative and repeatable solutions to safety and health challenges. Strong communication and collaboration skills to effectively engage with key members of the Project Management Team and various Project Directors. Comprehensive understanding of Ontario and Canadian laws/regulations, extensive rail construction experience, and best practices for minimizing safety and health impacts during project execution. Exceptional leadership abilities to serve as a role model, positively influencing the work of others through collaboration, technical expertise, and effective interpersonal skills.

Additional Qualifications:

Advanced knowledge of environmental, safety, and health disciplines, along with applicable methodologies in the engineering and construction sectors. Capability to foster collaborative and effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. Industry certification from an accredited organization for credentialing ES&H practitioners (e.g., CSP, CRSP, CMIOSH, etc.).
