The Director of Safety and Health is a vital member of the Senior Leadership Team, tasked with the responsibility of implementing top-tier safety and health management systems. This role focuses on the development of key initiatives aimed at enhancing the local Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) culture and performance.
Key Responsibilities:- Design and execute strategic, sustainable safety and health programs that comply with client, provincial, and federal regulations.
- Collaborate with various Department Heads (e.g., Project Director, Commercial, Supply Chain, Engineering) to ensure that safety and health initiatives are proactive, effective, and aligned with project objectives.
- Build strong relationships with Supply Chain members to promote proactive engagement and deploy effective risk mitigation strategies.
- Analyze safety and health performance data to provide tailored, actionable solutions that enhance safety outcomes.
- Organize and lead strategic safety and health workshops, summits, and meetings across all levels of the Supply Chain.
- Assist in developing and implementing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to support both short- and long-term strategies that meet project goals.
- Engage in meetings with clients, project team members, and contractors to communicate specialized safety and health requirements impacting project design, construction timelines, and costs.
- Work alongside the Project Director and ES&H Manager to address and resolve compliance issues, notices of violations, and potential penalties.
Education and Experience:
- Extensive experience managing large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent) in environmental, safety, health, or a related discipline, with 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proven ability to deliver innovative solutions to safety and health challenges.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with key members of the Project Management Team.
- In-depth understanding of applicable laws and regulations, particularly in Ontario, along with extensive rail construction experience.
- Exceptional leadership capabilities to influence and inspire others positively.
- Advanced knowledge of environmental, safety, and health practices within the engineering and construction sectors.
- Ability to cultivate effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Industry certification from an accredited organization for ES&H practitioners.
