Main Responsibilities

The Horticultural Technician II will engage in advanced horticultural tasks at a journeyman level within prominent park environments. Under general oversight, this role will manage the care and enhancement of designated areas and supervise one or more team members.

Key Duties

The Horticultural Technician II will:

  • Coordinate and execute a range of skilled horticultural activities including propagation, planting, spraying, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, and revitalizing floral displays, shrub beds, and lawns across diverse horticultural and landscape environments.
  • Care for trees, maintain formal lawns, sports fields, and recreational green spaces.
  • Respond to various horticultural and recreational inquiries from the public.
  • Oversee and participate in the work of assistants involved in horticultural and maintenance tasks.
  • Prepare cost estimations and procure materials, tools, and equipment while liaising with suppliers and other departments.
  • Provide feedback on detailed landscape designs and maintain routine records related to the work performed.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized apprenticeship in Horticulture, along with substantial gardening experience and some background in organizing areas for track and field sports.
  • Preferred: Completion of a Landscape Horticulturist Red Seal.
  • A valid Pesticide Applicator License may be required for certain positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • In-depth knowledge of horticultural methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Considerable understanding of maintaining turf sports areas.
  • Strong knowledge of plant species and tree care.
  • Familiarity with departmental functions and operations relevant to the role.
  • Ability to address a variety of challenges related to the maintenance and oversight of ornamental parks and sports areas.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks throughout the year.
  • Proficiency in designing horticultural displays, including carpet bedding and subtropical features.
  • Ability to interpret and work from landscape drawings.
  • Skill in directing and supervising the activities of assistants.
  • Expertise in the use and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of managing Integrated Pest Management programs applicable to the landscape areas under supervision.
  • Basic mathematical and computer skills are essential.
