Main Purpose and Function
The Horticultural Specialist II will engage in skilled horticultural tasks at a journeyman level within prominent park environments. This role involves overseeing the care and enhancement of designated areas while supervising one or more team members.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The Horticultural Specialist II is responsible for coordinating and executing a range of skilled horticultural activities, including:
  • Propagating, planting, and maintaining floral displays, shrub beds, and lawns across diverse horticultural settings.
  • Pruning and caring for trees, as well as maintaining formal lawns and recreational areas.
  • Addressing horticultural inquiries from the public.
  • Supervising and collaborating with assistants on horticultural maintenance tasks.
  • Preparing estimates and procuring materials and tools in coordination with suppliers.
  • Providing insights on detailed landscape designs.
  • Maintaining accurate records related to horticultural activities.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized apprenticeship in Horticulture, along with significant gardening experience.
  • Completion of a Landscape Horticulturist Red Seal is preferred.
  • A valid Pesticide Applicator License may be required for certain positions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • In-depth knowledge of horticultural methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Extensive understanding of turf maintenance for sports areas.
  • Strong knowledge of plant care and tree maintenance.
  • Ability to address a variety of challenges in maintaining ornamental parks and sports facilities.
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks throughout the year.
  • Skill in designing horticultural displays and interpreting landscape drawings.
  • Ability to lead and mentor assistants in horticultural activities.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining gardening tools and equipment.
  • Understanding of Integrated Pest Management principles as applicable to landscaped areas.
  • Basic mathematical and computer skills are essential.
A valid BC Driver's License is required for this position, ensuring the ability to fulfill job responsibilities effectively. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed the Vancouver Park Board's Apprenticeship Program.
