Main Purpose and Function
The Horticultural Specialist II will engage in skilled horticultural activities at the journeyman level within prominent park environments. Under general oversight, this role will be accountable for the maintenance and enhancement of designated areas and will oversee one or more staff members.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The Horticultural Specialist II will coordinate and execute a range of skilled horticultural tasks, including propagating, planting, spraying, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, and renovating floral displays, shrub beds, and lawns across various horticultural and landscape environments. Responsibilities include:
- Planting, pruning, and caring for trees.
- Maintaining formal lawns, sports fields, and recreational lawn areas.
- Addressing a variety of horticultural and recreational inquiries from the public.
- Supervising and participating in the work of one or more assistants engaged in horticultural and maintenance tasks.
- Preparing estimates and ordering materials, tools, and equipment while liaising with suppliers and other City departments.
- Providing feedback on detailed Landscape Drawings.
- Maintaining routine records related to the work performed.
- Performing related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12, a recognized apprenticeship in Horticulture, significant experience in gardening, and some experience in laying out areas for track and field sports.
- Completion of a Landscape Horticulturist Red Seal is preferred.
- A valid Pesticide Applicator License may be required for certain positions.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in horticultural work.
- Considerable understanding of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in maintaining turf sports areas.
- Strong knowledge of plant materials and tree care.
- Sound understanding of departmental functions and operations as they relate to the work performed.
- Ability to manage a wide range of challenges associated with the maintenance and supervision of ornamental park and sports areas.
- Capacity to perform physically demanding tasks throughout the year.
- Skill in designing horticultural displays such as carpet bedding and subtropical arrangements.
- Ability to interpret and work from Landscape Drawings.
- Capability to direct, supervise, and engage in the activities of one or more assistants.
- Proficiency in the use and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment.
- Knowledge and ability to implement the Integrated Pest Management program relevant to the landscape areas under their supervision.
- Basic mathematical and computer skills are essential.
Preference will be given to candidates who have successfully completed the Vancouver Park Board's Apprenticeship Program.
