Main Purpose & Function
This role is situated within the Renovation Centre, part of the customer-focused Development & Building Services Centre. The position involves technical work of moderate complexity related to the processing of various permits, including sign permits. Responsibilities encompass reviewing applications for additions to residential properties, secondary suites, tenant improvements, and ensuring compliance with relevant by-laws and policies. The role also includes coordinating the technical review of sign permits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts data and records research utilizing multiple sources, including property files and digital systems.
  • Engages in data entry and the organization of permit documentation.
  • Performs technical and administrative tasks to examine architectural plans for compliance with city regulations.
  • Prepares correspondence and provides pertinent information to the public.
  • Handles inquiries from the public and design professionals regarding building and zoning regulations, including participation in the department's telephone center.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by relevant courses from a recognized technical institution, ideally a Diploma in Building Technology.
  • Substantial experience in building construction and familiarity with zoning administration, with the ability to accurately assess and interpret plans.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in the construction sector or a design office is advantageous.
  • Strong time and project management skills to effectively handle deadlines and a high volume of work with shifting priorities.
  • Ability to interact tactfully with the public and manage a sometimes high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for conveying information clearly and explaining technical matters in accessible terms.
  • Proficient writing skills and demonstrated accuracy in keyboarding.
  • Preference will be given to candidates knowledgeable in City Building and Zoning By-Laws and those who have achieved Level I certification from the Building Inspectors Association.

Licenses and Other Requirements:

  • A valid BC Driver's License is required, free of restrictions that would impede job performance.
  • Transcripts must be attached to the application.

The City of Vancouver offers a Flexible Work Program, allowing staff to work remotely 1 – 4 days a week from locations within a commutable distance from their worksite. This position is eligible for the Flexible Work Program.
