Job Title: Professional Standards Specialist

Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency is seeking a highly skilled Professional Standards Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Internal & Investigative Services department, you will be responsible for developing, facilitating, and monitoring training programs for Fire Prevention staff.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fire safety and regulatory compliance, with experience in training and development. You will be responsible for creating individualized training plans for all positions in the Division, as well as developing technical-based training programs for internal and external stakeholders.

As a Professional Standards Specialist, you will be expected to conduct research and stay up-to-date with codes and standards, operational practices, and industry best standards. You will also be responsible for reviewing and recommending changes to established policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and deliver training programs for Fire Prevention Personnel
  • Conduct research and stay current with codes and standards, operational practices, and industry best standards
  • Review and recommend changes to established policies, standard operating procedures, and guidelines
  • Represent HRM on various committees and associations as required
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records of all activities
  • Prepare and submit reports on a timely basis
  • Develop minimum acceptability criteria for external testing and verification companies
  • Perform ongoing needs analysis to identify training gaps within the Division
  • Create budgets for all costs associated with training
Requirements:
  • Level 2 Fire Inspector Certification or Level 2 Building Official Diploma of Qualification
  • Minimum eight (8) years' relevant experience administering the Fire Safety Act and Regulations, Building Code Act and Regulations, and/or related legislation
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver's license
  • Considerable experience inspecting complex buildings
