About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to join our team as an Indigenous Cultural Coordinator. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with our staff and Indigenous community members to promote cultural awareness and inclusion within our district.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a cultural liaison between local First Nation Communities, other Indigenous communities, students, parents, and school staff to facilitate communication and collaboration.
  • Advocate for Indigenous students, ensuring their unique needs are addressed, and they have access to resources and support.
  • Organize cultural awareness programs, workshops, and events within schools/district to promote understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, history, and traditions.
  • Assist in the organization and planning of district cultural events and professional development events hosted by our Indigenous Education Department.
  • Develop and adapt educational resources that reflect Indigenous perspective and content, with an emphasis on local First Nations knowledge/culture, supporting teachers and students in their learning.
  • Maintain and update Indigenous Education pamphlet and website; create and distribute monthly newsletter.
  • Apply for funding from diverse sources, including writing proposals and reports for grant applications.
  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date Indigenous Education department statistics, finances and board reports.
  • Collaborate with local First Nations communities and other Indigenous communities to involve them in the educational process, seeking input on cultural programs.
  • Offer training and professional development opportunities for educators and SD 60 staff to enhance their understanding of Indigenous cultural and pedagogical practices.
Requirements
  • A preference for candidates with Indigenous heritage, understands and is fluent in a First Nation language and a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions and perspectives.
  • At least 2 years post-secondary education in Social Work, Youth Care, Indigenous Studies, and related experience. Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Significant experience in Indigenous education, community engagement, or related fields, demonstrating a track record of advocacy for Indigenous students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, parents, educational staff and community members.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and the ability to foster inclusive and respectful environments.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills to plan and execute cultural events and programs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders to achieve common goals.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing needs and circumstances within the educational system.
  • Valid driver's license as this position will require travel to schools and First Nations communities.
