The Role:
The Six Sigma Black Belt position is a pivotal leadership role within Maple Leaf Foods, primarily responsible for spearheading and facilitating process enhancement initiatives both internally and with key external partners, including customers and suppliers. The aim of these initiatives is to cultivate organizational proficiency that drives process enhancements, boosts operational productivity, and maximizes value for stakeholders and customers alike.Six Sigma is integral to our disciplined culture, serving as the foundation for how Maple Leaf Foods refines business processes and enhances performance. It is our approach to problem-solving and implementing substantial transformations. Black Belts are equipped with the methodologies and tools necessary for the organization to enhance processes and tackle intricate challenges through analytical techniques. A thorough understanding of process management principles and various improvement methodologies, including Lean Manufacturing, is expected from the Six Sigma Black Belt. This role is also seen as a pathway to nurture our future leaders in operations.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Comprehend and assist in the execution of site goals. Aid in identifying and quantifying Critical Business Needs (CBN) and primary areas for enhancement.
- Lead the OEE Continuous Improvement process with cross-functional teams at the site, including establishing annual OEE improvement objectives and facilitating weekly reviews and action planning.
- Support the development and facilitation of the site Continuous Improvement plan, including project pipeline management and overall progress monitoring.
- Ensure that Continuous Improvement project teams are employing the correct improvement methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean, OpEx tools) and provide necessary training on these tools.
- Conduct business case evaluations and risk assessments as needed. Offer Continuous Improvement Project Management support utilizing DMADV / PDCA frameworks.
- Investigate and implement functional best practices within the scope of projects.
- Ensure lasting results through effective change management and practical control plans.
- Mentor leaders on Six Sigma, Lean, and Operational Excellence methodologies and tools.
- Assist Site Leaders in deploying the Operations Excellence framework, including conducting annual baseline assessments and team deployments. Lead Waste Elimination teams to enhance operator skills in waste identification and reduction.
- Understand and support functional objectives and strategies.
- Assist in identifying and quantifying significant opportunity areas, including the re-application of insights across Maple Leaf Foods.
- Participate in the management team at the plant.
- Maintain an openness to coaching and actively pursue learning within the role.
- Occasional travel may be necessary for training or project-related work.
Qualifications:
- A university degree (BSc., Engineering, or Operations Management).
- A minimum of 5 to 8 years of relevant work experience, with a background in manufacturing or supply chain, as well as commercial, finance, or other transactional functions being advantageous.
- Proven track record of achieving successful outcomes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, including the application of process improvement and quality tools. Demonstrates a commitment to achieving results in a fact-based manner.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey information effectively (both verbally and in writing) to all organizational levels, including senior leadership.
- Proven ability to drive change through influence.
- Experience in leading and/or coaching continuous improvement projects, recognized as a strong mentor in continuous improvement concepts.
- Experience in managing complex projects that necessitate strong leadership, initiative, and change management skills is beneficial.
- Prior experience with Six Sigma tools and methodologies is essential.
- Demonstrated ability to implement and instruct on Lean Methodologies and Operational Excellence.
