JOB PURPOSE:

The Consumer Insights Specialist utilizes sensory and consumer research methodologies to deliver valuable insights and guidance to McCain's regional and local Product Development teams throughout the innovation process.

This role is a vital member of the global sensory team, supporting the Canadian regional team by providing direction and training to various stakeholders on all sensory dimensions of McCain's offerings. The Specialist collaborates with cross-functional teams to integrate sensory best practices and testing throughout the product development lifecycle. Additionally, this position partners with Product Development and sensory quality teams to identify key product attributes and assist with global initiatives as necessary.

The Specialist is responsible for employing existing tools and methods while also implementing new sensory consumer experience techniques to inform product development, facilitate successful innovation launches, and guide renovation efforts. The Consumer Insights Specialist designs and leads testing plans in collaboration with Consumer Insights counterparts, applying scientific rigor, generating reports, and formulating actionable recommendations for stakeholders.

This role involves collaboration with R&D, Marketing, Consumer Insights, Operations, and other internal and external partners on new products, processes, product stewardship, quality enhancements, and cost-saving initiatives to drive McCain's profitable growth.

As part of the Global Center of Excellence for Sensory and User Experience, the Specialist also works with internal team members to enhance McCain's global sensory capabilities. This includes optimizing and standardizing sensory tools and developing new or hybrid methodologies. The Specialist will also collaborate with their manager and team to create new training materials, assess and onboard new vendors, and build additional capabilities such as descriptive analysis and discrimination testing while identifying and addressing gaps in the company's sensory needs.

Core Accountabilities/Outcomes:

  • Collaborates with Consumer Insights, Product Development, Marketing, Packaging, Supply Chain, and other business teams to optimize innovation products, enhance product quality, and define product excellence.
  • Guides projects through comprehensive consumer and sensory learning plans from initial guidance to optimization and confirmatory testing, ensuring foundational product knowledge and quality protection.
  • Facilitates consumer/operator interactions to foster empathy and understanding.
  • Advocates for product design and quality as the sensory representative on Research & Development and business teams.
  • Strengthens best sensory practices within Research & Development teams and promotes a sensory-focused mindset.
  • Applies experimental design to sensory and consumer testing.
  • Translates data into insights through the synthesis of qualitative consumer learning and the interpretation of statistical analyses from quantitative sensory and consumer testing.
  • Communicates recommendations and key findings in a clear and accessible manner, guiding business teams on the next steps in the product development process.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key sensory and consumer testing vendors to ensure seamless execution of tests and appropriate pricing.
  • Acts as a core team member of cross-functional project teams.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 4 years (2 years with a Master's degree) of experience in sensory and consumer research across various research techniques.
  • Experience in planning and executing sensory and/or consumer research.
  • Fundamental understanding of applied statistical analysis, including experimental design and multivariate analysis techniques.

Key Competencies:

  • Exceptional interpersonal, collaboration, and influencing skills.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Ability to manage resources and leverage existing data to effectively lead multiple projects.
  • Depth of knowledge in sensory science.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging diverse audiences from highly technical to non-technical personnel.
  • Knowledge of Food Chemistry/Biochemistry/Statistics is desired.
  • Proven track record of supporting successful product innovations through sensory insights that meet customer needs.
  • Ability to recognize, disseminate, and reconcile information into insights that enhance McCain's decision-making capabilities.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable to change.
  • Experience in managing external vendor relationships is desired.
  • Scientific curiosity and an engaging demeanor that fosters a culture of experimentation within the team.
