Position Overview

The Registered Nurse (RN) exemplifies clinical proficiency and adheres to the core competencies outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), alongside the established policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre. The RN collaborates effectively as a vital member of the healthcare team, delivering direct patient care in accordance with the standards set forth by the CNO. These responsibilities influence decision-making regarding care assignments and necessitate consultation and collaboration among healthcare providers. All nursing professionals are committed to continuous learning and development.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and an integral part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team focused on delivering quality patient care and optimizing patient flow. The RN will provide exceptional care to a diverse population of acute medical patients in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient and family-centered care within the RN scope of practice, guided by the three-factor framework of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Adhere to established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Ensure practice aligns with entry-to-practice competencies, standards, guidelines, and relevant legislation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all members of the healthcare team.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide comprehensive care for patients with complex health conditions.
  • Provide mentorship and clinical support to peers as required.
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment and documentation of each patient's health status.
  • Assist in developing and implementing the Plan of Care, evaluating its effectiveness.
  • Participate in the orientation and training of new staff and students.
  • Act as a role model, integrating safe and best practices into daily operations to ensure exemplary care.
  • Take a leadership role in coordinating patient care within assigned areas.
  • Utilize human and material resources effectively.
  • Engage in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical pathways.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Recent experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) within the last five years is essential.
  • Proficiency in initiating IVs for children under two years of age is required.
  • Experience in caring for ventilated neonates, CPAP, and managing UAC and UVC lines, as well as TPN, is necessary.
  • Competence in performing venipuncture on neonates is required.
  • Strong physical assessment skills and critical thinking abilities are essential.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills are required.
  • Ability to function independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to patient and staff safety policies, fostering an inclusive environment.
  • Proficient in electronic documentation practices.
  • Demonstrated excellence in both written and verbal communication.

Educational Requirements

  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is required.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Certification is mandatory.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) is preferred.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
  • Education in breastfeeding practices is preferred.
  • Completion of the S.T.A.B.L.E. course is preferred.
