About the Role

The Sample Preparation Supervisor is a key member of the laboratory operations team at ALS, responsible for ensuring the smooth delivery of services to clients. This role requires strong leadership and communication skills, as well as the ability to maintain high standards of quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain close liaison with the laboratory manager and other staff to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • Identify and resolve internal and external problems, including client inquiries and complaints related to quality issues.
  • Investigate and resolve quality issues, and suggest proactive actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Train and develop Sample Preparation technicians on routine prep samples, ensuring they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.
  • Ensure all Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to, and that all staff follow safety procedures and policies when working.
  • Maintain a positive work environment through active team participation and a focus on quality customer service.
  • Maintain quality records and track worker progress.
  • Assist in the hiring process, including training and record maintenance.
  • Use correct methods in accordance with established procedures and schedules, ensuring analytical quality.
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate new staff health and safety orientation and maintain an updated database.
  • Assist in writing safety procedures, policies, and develop educational materials for the safety program.
  • Chair the Joint Health, Safety, and Environment Committee and provide training to members.
  • Assist with conducting incident management, including investigating incidents, root cause analysis, and follow-up.
  • Develop safety meeting training materials and participate in meetings.
  • Coordinate all workplace safety improvement objectives.
  • Organize and maintain the first aid team, first aid supplies, and first aid injuries.
  • Maintain and update SDS records on site.
  • Assist with exposure monitoring protocols and equipment checks.
  • Facilitate training and respirator fit testing for existing employees and maintain records.
  • Manage special waste program requirements and other waste management initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About You:

  • Experience in managing and training staff is an asset.
  • Strong customer service focus, interpersonal, and organizational abilities.
  • Pleasant and professional telephone manner.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year's office-related experience or reception experience.
  • Completion of an office administration certificate or diploma is preferred.
  • Some HR and benefits background would be an asset.
  • Experience in Health, Safety, and/or Environment programs would be an asset.
  • Forklift license/certification or experience driving a forklift is an asset.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Able to stand for up to 4 hours continuously.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for an extended period.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers (i.e., using a keyboard).
