Job Summary

As a Personal Support Worker at VON Canada, you will play a vital role in providing companionship, personal care, and health maintenance services to clients in their homes or communities. This position requires a compassionate and detail-oriented individual who can work effectively in a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of clients and promote their independence and well-being.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observe and evaluate client needs to determine the necessity for changes in their care plan.
  • Contribute to the development of care plans under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Implement changes to care plans as directed by the Manager for safety, liability, and financial reasons.
  • Report changes in client needs or home situations to the immediate supervisor or Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Perform personal support tasks, including light cleaning, meal preparation, and household safety monitoring.
  • Provide personal care, including assistance with walking, climbing stairs, and personal hygiene.
  • Provide respite care and support to clients' families as required.
  • Organize daily activities and prioritize tasks under the direction of the Personal Support Program Manager.
  • Complete daily call checks and other forms as required to maintain effective service operation.
  • Assess client communication patterns and ability to relate.
  • Communicate with healthcare team members regarding client needs and inform supervisors of changes or concerns.
Requirements
  • High school diploma.
  • Secondary school education preferred.
  • CCA Certification required in Nova Scotia.
  • Must have a certificate in Home Support Worker (Level I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide.
  • Must have a current Standard First Aid Certificate or CPR level C Certificate, if applicable to the work being performed.
  • Some household management experience and experience working with elderly or ill individuals or children.
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Able to communicate effectively with clients and families in a clear and respectful manner.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team or independently as required.
  • Able to take direction well.
  • Ability to adjust to working in different social and economic environments.
  • Capacity to adhere to strict confidentiality.
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with attention to detail, and to lift and carry using appropriate lifting techniques. The successful candidate will also be able to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs, and will have the ability to grip and perform fine hand movements.
