Position Overview

This role is dedicated to delivering interpretive services within the educational environment of Vancouver Community College.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate interpretation during various academic activities, including lectures, labs, assessments, field excursions, and tutoring sessions, ensuring effective communication between Deaf, hard of hearing, Deaf-blind students, their peers, and faculty.
  • Clarify the interpreter's responsibilities to administrative staff, instructors, and colleagues.
  • Incorporate feedback from students to enhance interpretation quality.
  • Gather necessary preparatory materials, such as lecture notes and resources, to ensure readiness for assignments.
  • Exhibit professional boundaries and strong interpersonal skills while supporting students and collaborating with educational teams.
  • Foster cooperative relationships with students, fellow interpreters, and college personnel through teamwork.
  • Provide feedback on communication strategies to the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor and educational team members.
  • Assist the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor with additional departmental tasks as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Completion of secondary education and graduation from an accredited Interpreter Training Program is essential.
  • A minimum of three years' experience in interpreting American Sign Language (ASL) and related modalities in an educational context is required. Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.
  • Preferred candidates will have provincial Postsecondary Screen and Written Test of Knowledge (WTK) certifications.
  • Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) is mandatory.
  • Exceptional sign language proficiency is necessary to effectively communicate with Deaf-Blind, hard of hearing, and Deaf students, as well as faculty and staff.
  • A solid understanding of Deaf culture and the challenges faced by Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students is crucial.
  • Knowledge of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, ethics, and best practices in the interpreting field is required.
  • Proficiency in using communication technologies, including email and videophones, is essential.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Excellent time management and organizational abilities, capable of meeting tight deadlines.

Salary Information

Compensation is based on the prorated Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) salary scale.
