Join Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as an Associate Physician in Gastroenterology

The Associate Physician (AP) in Gastroenterology, which encompasses Hepatology and Therapeutic Endoscopy, is responsible for delivering services within the defined clinical duties of an Associate Physician. This role acts as a physician extender, providing care to patients within the comprehensive GI team.

The AP operates under the guidance of the supervising GI/H/TE physician on a daily basis and is accountable to the Head of Gastroenterology or their designated representative for ensuring high-quality care and professional growth.

The AP plays a vital role in delivering continuous care in a collaborative team environment, working closely with the most responsible physician (MRP), fellows, residents, nursing staff, and allied health professionals to support the care of GI patients as well as liver transplant patients.

The AP must exhibit strong communication skills and the ability to foster relationships with other healthcare professionals. They should possess excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate the capability to work effectively within a team. Furthermore, the AP is expected to document in compliance with the standards set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) and organizational policies.

Qualifications

Education, Licensing, & Experience:

  • Medical degree from an institution recognized in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training as a medical or surgical specialist, validated by the CPSBC.
  • Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs).
  • Must fulfill the CPSBC's English language proficiency criteria.
  • Eligibility for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician category is required. Candidates must have Canadian Citizenship, be a permanent resident, or possess legal authorization to live and work in British Columbia.
  • Qualified candidates will obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification prior to beginning orientation and maintain this certification throughout their employment.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proven knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage common GI emergencies, including unstable patients with GI bleeding, biliary sepsis, liver failure, severe nutritional decline, and related issues such as anemia and electrolyte imbalances.
  • Ability to recognize medical instability and prioritize initial resuscitation efforts while coordinating with appropriate hospital services, such as the intensive care unit or internal medicine.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic internal medicine procedures, including IV line placement, NG tube insertion, and paracentesis.
  • Capability to perform within the scope of Associate Physician responsibilities and effectively interact with other professionals in complex, dynamic situations.
  • Excellent English communication skills, including the ability to engage with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals regarding health findings, diagnoses, treatments, prognoses, and follow-up care.
  • Proficient computer and written communication skills, including order entry, clinical documentation, and the ability to review relevant diagnostic information and health history.
  • Ability to thrive in a team-based environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.
  • Capacity to manage professional responsibilities amidst multiple, competing demands.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the duties of the position.

Assessment and Probationary Period

During a 12-week probationary period, the AP will be evaluated on their competence to perform duties in the designated specialty areas under the supervision of a physician. The assessment will cover:

  • Basic clinical skills
  • Communication abilities
  • Willingness to function as a member of a clinical team
  • Specialized knowledge and skills relevant to the clinical placement
  • Clinical decision-making and appropriate use of clinical and diagnostic resources
  • Clinical documentation practices
  • Procedures necessary for effective teamwork

Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the probationary period, with subsequent six-month and annual reviews.

Compensation

The AP is an employee of VCH and will receive remuneration in accordance with the provincial guidelines established by the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) at pay level Range 9 following a successful 12-week orientation and assessment period. The AP will also receive benefits, including four (4) weeks of paid vacation and extended health, dental, life, and disability insurance. During the 12-week assessment and orientation period, the AP will be compensated at pay level Range 8.
