Join the team as an Associate Physician in Gastroenterology with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)

The Associate Physician (AP) in Gastroenterology, which encompasses Hepatology and Therapeutic Endoscopy, is responsible for delivering services within the scope of an Associate Physician's clinical duties. This role acts as a physician extender, providing care to patients within the comprehensive GI team.

The AP operates under the guidance of the attending GI/H/TE, ensuring accountability to the Head of Gastroenterology or designated delegate for the overall quality of care and professional growth.

The AP plays a crucial role in delivering continuous care in a collaborative team environment, working alongside the most responsible physician (MRP), fellows, residents, nursing staff, and allied health professionals to support GI patients and liver transplant patients.

The AP must demonstrate effective communication skills and the ability to build relationships with other healthcare professionals. Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork capabilities are essential. The AP is also expected to document in compliance with the standards set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) and organizational policies.

Qualifications

Education, Licensing, & Experience :

Medical degree from a recognized institution in the World Directory of Medical Schools. A minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training as a medical or surgical specialist, verified by the CPSBC. Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs). Must fulfill the CPSBC's English language proficiency requirements. Eligibility for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician class is required. Candidates must have Canadian Citizenship, be a permanent resident, or possess legal authorization to live and work in British Columbia. Candidates must hold or obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification prior to commencing orientation and maintain such certification throughout their employment.

Knowledge & Abilities:

Proven knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage common GI emergencies, including unstable patients with GI bleeding, biliary sepsis, liver failure, and severe nutritional decline. Ability to assess medical instability and prioritize resuscitation efforts while coordinating with appropriate hospital services, such as intensive care or internal medicine. Demonstrated proficiency in basic internal medicine procedures, including IV lines, NG tubes, and paracentesis. Capacity to function within the scope of Associate Physician duties while effectively interacting with other professionals in complex, dynamic situations. Excellent English communication skills, enabling effective interaction with patients, families, and healthcare professionals regarding health findings, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Competence in computer and written communication, including order entry, clinical documentation, and reviewing relevant diagnostic information and health history. Ability to thrive in a team-based environment, showcasing strong interpersonal skills. Capability to manage professional responsibilities amidst multiple, competing demands. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

ASSESSMENT AND PROBATIONARY PERIOD

During a 12-week probationary period, the AP will be evaluated on their competence to perform duties in the designated specialty areas under supervision. The evaluation will cover:

Basic clinical skills

• Communication skills

• Team collaboration abilities

• Specialized knowledge and skills relevant to the clinical placement

• Clinical decision-making and resource utilization

• Clinical documentation

• Procedures necessary for effective team functioning

Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of the probationary period, along with six-month and annual performance reviews.

REMUNERATION

The AP is an employee of VCH and will receive compensation according to the provincial guidelines established by the Health Employers Association of BC (HEABC) at pay level Range 9 following a successful 12-week orientation and assessment period. Benefits include four (4) weeks of paid vacation and extended health, dental, life, and disability insurance. During the 12-week assessment and orientation period, the AP will be compensated at pay level Range 8.
