Wage: Hourly wage of $26.22

Number of Positions: 1

Start Date: January 1, 2024

End Date: August 31, 2024

The Westcoast Women in Engineering, Science and Technology (WWEST) initiative, in collaboration with the integrative STEM Team Advancing Networks of Diversity (iSTAND), is on the lookout for a dedicated STEM Youth Outreach Activity Coordinator. This role involves co-designing and facilitating engaging in-person events aimed at schools and community groups. The ideal candidate will demonstrate confidence in independently managing school visits and community activities, while also contributing to the design and execution of STEM-related projects for youth in grades K-12. Additional responsibilities may include assisting in the creation of newsletters, social media content, and supporting the planning of STEM camps. A genuine interest or background in science and education is essential.

Organizational Context:

The overarching aim of the WWEST/iSTAND program in British Columbia and Yukon is to foster intersectionality and diversity, creating equitable and inclusive environments for underrepresented individuals in the fields of science and engineering. The WWEST initiative is rooted in the principles of Inclusion, Collaboration, and Innovation. Through classroom interactions, intergenerational events, and social media outreach, WWEST strives to cultivate interest and retention in STEM fields. iSTAND focuses on building a supportive network for underrepresented individuals in STEM and driving organizational change through the development of programs that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on the organization and facilitation of intergenerational events across British Columbia and Yukon.
  • Assist in developing engaging STEM lessons aligned with the BC Education curriculum and deliver these lessons in K-12 classrooms.
  • Coordinate with team members for the procurement of necessary classroom and event supplies.
  • Promote program activities through various platforms and assist in maintaining metrics and data for program reporting.
  • Contribute to the creation of newsletters for distribution through local school networks.
  • Co-organize and facilitate seasonal youth camps when feasible.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Perform other related duties to support the development and promotion of WWEST/iSTAND programming.

Accountability:

Errors or lapses in judgment in this multifaceted role could lead to scheduling conflicts, miscommunication, or disruptions in classroom activities. Such issues may affect the overall success of initiatives and the organization's reputation within the provincial STEM community. The individual in this position must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive to ensure the effective execution of diverse responsibilities.

Supervision:

This role operates under the supervision of the WWEST Program Manager and the direction of Dr. Jennifer Jakobi.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduation with additional training in a related field and a minimum of two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Teacher certification or equivalent education and experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with youth is an asset.
  • Clean Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record check.
  • Full COVID vaccination is required.
  • Driver's license and personal transportation are necessary.

Performance Competencies:

  • Ability to teach in a dynamic environment with support from teachers and school staff.
  • Physical capability to care for children of varying ages and abilities.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in task execution.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in both written and verbal communication.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Understanding of BC educational programming is an asset.
