The Westcoast Women in Engineering, Science and Technology (WWEST) initiative, in collaboration with the integrative STEM Team Advancing Networks of Diversity (iSTAND), is in search of a dedicated coordinator to lead youth outreach activities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This role involves the design and facilitation of engaging in-person events within educational institutions and community settings. The ideal candidate will demonstrate confidence in independently managing school visits and community events, while also contributing to the development and execution of STEM-related activities for students in grades K-12.
Organizational Overview:
The overarching aim of the WWEST/iSTAND program is to champion intersectionality and diversity, fostering equitable and inclusive environments for underrepresented groups in the fields of science and engineering. Grounded in the principles of Inclusion, Collaboration, and Innovation, the WWEST program engages in various activities such as classroom visits, intergenerational events, and social media outreach to enhance interest and retention in STEM fields. iSTAND aims to create a supportive network for underrepresented individuals in STEM, driving organizational change through initiatives that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate on the organization and facilitation of intergenerational events throughout British Columbia and Yukon.
- Assist in crafting engaging STEM lessons aligned with the BC Education curriculum and deliver these lessons in K-12 classrooms.
- Coordinate with team members to organize and procure necessary supplies for classroom and event activities.
- Support the development of a network within the STEM community and promote program activities through various platforms.
- Assist in collecting, maintaining, and organizing metrics and data for program reporting.
- Participate in the creation and distribution of newsletters through local educational networks.
- Co-organize and co-facilitate seasonal youth camps when feasible.
- Engage in team meetings and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
- Perform additional duties related to the development and promotion of WWEST/iSTAND programming as required.
Accountability:
Errors or lapses in judgment in this multifaceted role could lead to various consequences, including scheduling conflicts, miscommunication, and potential disruptions in classroom activities. Such errors may adversely affect the organization's reputation and hinder its mission within the provincial STEM community. Therefore, the individual in this position must exhibit strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to mitigate these risks.
Supervision:
This position operates under the guidance of the WWEST Program Manager and the direction of Dr. Jennifer Jakobi.
Qualifications:
- High school graduation with additional training in a related field and a minimum of two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Preferred candidates will possess a Teacher's Certification or equivalent education (minimum completion of an undergraduate degree, with a preference for those in a STEM-related field).
- Experience working with youth is advantageous.
- A clean Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record check is required.
- Full COVID vaccination is mandatory.
- A valid driver's license and access to transportation are required.
Performance Competencies:
- Ability to effectively teach in a dynamic environment with support from educators.
- Physical capability to engage with children of varying ages and abilities.
- Adaptability and flexibility in executing tasks.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail in both written and verbal communication.
- Basic computer literacy is necessary.
- Understanding of BC educational programming is considered an asset.
