Montreal, Quebec, Canada Ciena Full time

Ciena is dedicated to a people-centric approach. Our teams thrive in a culture that emphasizes a personalized and adaptable work environment, fostering individual passions, growth, well-being, and a sense of belonging. As a technology company, we prioritize humanity, aligning our business objectives with significant social, community, and societal contributions.

Position Overview:

We recognize the importance of our workforce. As a network strategy and technology firm, we are driven by the desire to enhance people's lives – their productivity, creativity, health, and comfort. This is why we develop and implement technologies and services that yield exceptional results.

As an integral member of the High-Speed Photonics Operations team, the role of the Global Supply Chain Manager encompasses essential internal collaboration with R&D and product engineering teams, as well as external engagement with the Ciena supplier network. This position is crucial for the successful transition from product concept to large-scale production. The ideal candidate possesses a natural aptitude for translating R&D program requirements into a 'Production-ready' operational framework while ensuring comprehensive product lifecycle management from concept to ongoing production. The primary responsibilities of this role include:

NPI Program Operations Liaison for R&D and Supplier Ecosystem Partners
  • Collaborate closely with the R&D division to guarantee early and effective engagement with both existing and new suppliers to support Ciena's strategic objectives. Key responsibilities include:
Product Definition:
  • Serve as the primary interface between R&D and new suppliers to facilitate a new supplier product development initiative in conjunction with R&D. This involves understanding and defining project deliverables and costs, drafting a Statement of Work (SOW), negotiating development agreements, and conducting weekly joint discussions to address both technical and commercial matters.
  • Ensure that R&D's requirements for prototypes are comprehended and met by new or existing suppliers in alignment with Ciena's strategic objectives. This necessitates close collaboration with suppliers through established working rhythms to ensure all actions related to early supply and commercial/technical requirements are efficiently managed.
  • Ensure suppliers grasp product goals and drive them to meet standards for cost, output, capacity, quality, and reporting expectations.
  • The supplier landscape may include OEM suppliers, foundries, test equipment partners, and/or EMS partners.
Ramp Preparation:
  • While establishing a robust supply chain and selecting partners, this role ensures that operational considerations are pivotal in all decision-making criteria. Factors such as cost, BOM variability, product yield, testing methods, factory capacity, and supplier qualification are critical elements in program development. The candidate must possess a solid understanding of operational factors to facilitate productive discussions with key stakeholders and partners.
  • Define and communicate all elements necessary for pilot and ramp phases; conduct regular reviews prior to the pilot to guide the team towards achieving successful pilot outcomes.
Steady State Production:
  • Facilitate weekly discussions with core supplier partners to ensure successful product execution against KPIs such as cost, yield, output, capacity, quality, supply assurance, and forecast compliance.
  • Address any yield and quality challenges promptly by engaging the Product Engineering team or R&D as necessary.
  • Translate detailed technical challenges or opportunities into terms such as cost and schedule impacts that are comprehensible to senior management.
Global Commodity Management for EMS Partners and Tier 1 Component Vendors
  • Given the direct dependencies of NPI program success on supplier performance, this role involves managing a portfolio of critical commodities/suppliers. Key functions include:
    • Conducting pricing and contract negotiations as needed to achieve Ciena's total cost of ownership objectives.
    • To ensure supply assurance and cost competitiveness, collaborate with the product engineering team to identify second sourcing opportunities for key components/commodities. Work with EMS partners to establish a timeline for the introduction of second sources.
    • Understand global spending by supplier and ensure a balanced supply chain.
    • Establish operational rhythms (weekly, monthly, quarterly) and KPIs with vendors (component and EMS) to ensure optimal support and performance.
    • Act as the representative of Ciena to communicate performance requirements to suppliers. Ensure that escalation pathways are clearly defined to resolve issues swiftly.
  • Conduct complex RFQs on cutting-edge technology while clearly communicating requirements and timelines. The candidate must have a comprehensive understanding of the competitive landscape across various commodities while ensuring maximum engagement from partners (both internal and external) to drive successful RFQ outcomes.
  • Ability to analyze and present fact-based recommendations for supplier selection based on cost analysis and other critical variables for evaluating new and second sourcing partners is essential.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ideally, candidates should possess a minimum of 10 years of experience in the high-tech sector (telecommunications).
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering and a master's in business administration are preferred.
  • Strong collaborative skills are essential for this position.
  • Effective communication abilities on both technical and commercial fronts are required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Power BI is necessary.

Compensation and Benefits:

The annual salary range for this position is $86,200 - $137,800 CAD. Ciena's pay ranges are designed to reflect variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, representing our diverse products, industries, and business lines. Please note that the salary range information provided pertains specifically to the primary location.

Non-sales employees may qualify for a discretionary incentive bonus, while sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission. In addition to competitive compensation, Ciena offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, participation in 401(K) (USA) & DCPP (Canada) with company matching, Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), company-paid holidays, paid sick leave, and vacation time. We also comply with all applicable laws regarding Paid Family Leave and other leaves of absence.
