Under the direct oversight of the Learning Support Coordinator, the Educational Support Specialist offers a range of instructional and assistance services to individuals enrolled in Employment Training & Preparation initiatives.
These individuals present diverse cognitive, developmental, emotional, physical, and/or mental health challenges, necessitating tailored support to achieve their personal career aspirations.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilitation of student engagement, either individually or in small groups, within classroom and laboratory settings, with or without an instructor present:
- Clarifies and reinforces educational and program objectives;
- Interprets and supports students' personalized learning strategies;
- Addresses inquiries from students regarding assigned tasks, often providing guidance and direction;
- Monitors student performance, documenting progress and identifying areas of concern;
- Delivers instructional content in varied formats to ensure students achieve learning outcomes;
- Reinforces behavioral goals of the program;
- Collaborates with faculty in assessing student performance and developing recommendations through regular feedback on observed behaviors;
- Presents educational materials to groups or individuals under faculty direction;
- Facilitates group discussions to support learning objectives established by faculty;
- Adapts, creates, and maintains educational resources under faculty guidance;
- Ensures learning environments are well-equipped and supplied;
- Engages with student activity locations, becoming familiar with their operations. Participates in the development, execution, and assessment of individualized learning plans based on these sites;
- Provides ongoing instructional support for students aligned with their learning plans and designated activity sites;
- Maintains consistent communication with site supervisors and the student's support network, as directed by faculty;
- Observes and evaluates student performance during scheduled activities;
Supervision of Practical Experience Placements:
- Identifies and cultivates employer relationships for practical experience placements within the community;
- Assists faculty and students in locating suitable work placements;
- Drafts agreements with employers for student placements using standardized forms;
- Organizes site visits for students;
- Accompanies students on initial placements, introducing them to their job responsibilities;
- Initiates and sustains communication with work experience supervisors regarding student placements;
- Educates employers about the nature of a student's disability and its potential impact on job performance;
- Collaborates with employers to clarify expectations and guidelines for the practical experience;
- Monitors, supports, documents, and updates faculty on student performance at work sites;
- Coordinates and participates in evaluation meetings between students and work site supervisors to ensure fair and accurate assessments;
Additional Duties:
- Facilitates student connections and communication with other college programs and community organizations;
- Maintains accurate student records by ensuring relevant information is properly filed;
- Assists in the intake process for students and supports them through application, registration, and financial aid procedures;
- Participates in departmental and institutional marketing initiatives;
- Performs other related tasks of similar scope and complexity.
Qualifications:
A two-year diploma in special education from a recognized post-secondary institution and three years of experience working with adults in educational or related environments, including at least one year of direct experience with adults with special needs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to cultivate and maintain positive working relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues; possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; and exhibit strong communication skills with students, their families, staff, faculty, administration, and external organizations. Proficiency in various software applications, including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Photoshop, is required. Supporting Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Recommendations.
