Position Overview

The Toronto Star Newspapers Ltd. is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Journalist within the Editorial Department. This position involves engaging in various assignments across multiple newsroom departments.

As a Journalist at the Toronto Star, you will be expected to report and write with authority on urgent news stories while also providing insightful analysis and context. We are looking for a candidate who possesses strong news reporting abilities and excels in impactful journalism.

The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with newsroom colleagues, thinking creatively to produce stories that are not only accurate and comprehensive but also compelling and relevant to our audience. A digital-savvy approach is essential, as you will be encouraged to explore innovative storytelling methods and utilize customer analytics to enhance engagement and subscriptions. Daily reporting will be the primary focus, complemented by some feature writing.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated professional experience as a reporter, preferably with coverage of federal politics.
  • Exceptional news judgment and storytelling capabilities, along with multimedia proficiency.
  • Advanced writing skills that contribute to an engaging daily publication.
  • A proactive self-starter, capable of generating quality story ideas.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • High standards for detail and deadlines, producing clear and accurate copy under pressure.
  • Strong interviewing and newsgathering skills, with the ability to elicit information from subjects effectively.
  • Capability to build and maintain contacts and sources, demonstrating resourcefulness in challenging situations.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and diplomacy.
  • Familiarity with information access procedures and databases.
  • Proficient in CP style.
Work Environment

This position is based in the Ottawa Bureau, and the work hours will vary according to assignments, adhering to a standard 21-hour work week as outlined in the collective agreement.
