Job Overview
Under the supervision of the Small Options Homes Director, the Residential Rehabilitation Worker (RRW/Counselor) is expected to operate within the Philosophy and Principles, Rules of Work, and Policy Manual of Balsam Care.
Qualifications
- Education or experience in a Human Services field or a Community College Diploma
- Minimum one year of experience or a combination of education, training, and relevant work experience
- Must be capable of lifting 50 lbs.
Key Responsibilities
The Counselor is accountable for the following duties, along with any additional responsibilities as required:
- Ensure the physical and mental well-being of all clients is safeguarded and not jeopardized by other clients or staff.
- Observe, document, and communicate any changes in clients' physical and mental health, and accompany clients to appointments when necessary.
- Promote regular personal hygiene practices such as bathing, tooth brushing, and grooming.
- Encourage and provide healthy dietary options for clients.
- Administer, document, and supervise medications as per policy and perform basic first aid when needed.
- Facilitate access to recreational and leisure activities for clients.
- Assist clients in engaging in recreational and leisure activities as required.
- Support referrals to suitable community resources and liaise with those resources on behalf of the client.
- Ensure appropriate attire is maintained.
- Oversee client comfort and manage clothing allowances effectively.
- Encourage and support positive interactions and relationships within and outside the home.
- Support clients in fulfilling their individual spiritual needs.
Client Care and Programming
- Teach and supervise essential skills necessary for achieving optimal independence, including independent living skills, life skills, household management, and socialization.
- Identify client needs and collaborate with the program team to develop, implement, and evaluate tailored programs.
- Assist clients with their activities and responsibilities.
- Monitor and document client activities and interactions within their living environment.
- Maintain accurate and professional records, reports, and daily logs.
- Support menu planning, grocery shopping, and meal preparation to ensure nutritional needs are met.
- Conduct formal assessments of clients' skills and progress.
- Stay informed about community resources and their availability.
- Provide support to staff in other homes as needed.
Communication
- Contribute to an interdependent team approach in daily decision-making.
- Communicate effectively with the House Coordinator, staff, clients, families, municipal workers, medical professionals, advocates, neighbors, and community service employees.
- Responsible for maintaining assessments, program plans, monthly progress reports, daily logs, medication charts, and incident reports.
- Review recent entries in each client's progress notes at the start of each shift.
- Participate in meetings as required.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
- Provide orientation and training for new employees, volunteers, and students.
- Assess and provide orientation for prospective clients.
Safety and Maintenance
- Make informed decisions and take appropriate actions during crises or for crisis prevention.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and uphold standards consistently.
- Ensure the home is maintained in a clean, tidy, and well-kept condition at all times.
- Be knowledgeable about and implement Emergency Evacuation Plans and other safety measures as necessary.
- Recommend maintenance and replacement needs to the House Coordinator.
- Ensure the security of records and the house upon leaving.
General Responsibilities
- Act as a role model for clients at all times.
- Attend staff development sessions as required.
- Responsible for the operation of the home and the overall well-being of clients in the absence of the House Coordinator.
- Fulfill the role of teacher and mentor for clients.
- Work flexible shifts as necessary.
