POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Care Team Manager, the Clinical Respiratory Therapist plays a vital role in collaborating with hospital personnel, serving as a knowledgeable resource in therapeutic and diagnostic practices. This professional is tasked with the setup, operation, and evaluation of respiratory therapy apparatus, ensuring patient safety and delivering exceptional care.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overview :

ADVISORY

Offers guidance to newly appointed medical and nursing personnel regarding respiratory clinical practices as needed. Provides feedback and support for home care respiratory patients, their families, and healthcare providers. Assesses and recommends new respiratory and associated equipment.

TECHNICAL

Conducts functional assessments on all respiratory and related devices to guarantee optimal performance. Performs repairs and troubleshooting on respiratory and related equipment as necessary. Supplies emergency repair support in the event of anesthetic equipment malfunction, as well as for home care respiratory devices. Calibrates blood gas analyzers daily, executing routine maintenance and quality control procedures while documenting all activities. Verifies and checks all procedures on pulmonary function analyzers, computers, and printers to ensure precision and records all completed tasks. Cleans, dries, reassembles, inspects, and packages respiratory equipment for sterilization.

CLINICAL/THERAPEUTIC

Educates and demonstrates various components of respiratory therapy. Collaborates directly with medical and nursing staff to strategize respiratory therapy and management for optimal patient care. Participates in ICU rounds and develops ventilator management strategies in consultation with ICU physicians. Evaluates the respiratory condition of all patients and documents findings. Conducts various assessments to diagnose patient ailments. Administers therapeutic interventions in the treatment and management of patients. Assists in organizing the transportation of high-risk patients, determining necessary equipment and techniques. Adapts and modifies equipment to cater to individual patient needs. Responsible for the application of life support mechanical ventilation, including setup, adjustments, and daily monitoring of patients. Serves as a member of the emergency resuscitation team, responding to all emergency calls, intubating, ventilating, and analyzing arterial blood gas samples as necessary. Instructs patients on the proper use of self-administered respiratory therapy devices and provides follow-up education as needed. Stays informed of the latest advancements in techniques and equipment to enhance respiratory care methods. Engages in seminars and workshops for professional development. Required to be on-call as scheduled, providing continuous coverage for respiratory services.

DIAGNOSTIC

Executes diagnostic procedures, evaluates respiratory conditions, and assesses responses to treatments. Collects arterial and capillary samples, and is responsible for interpreting results and recommending corrective actions for abnormal findings. Leads patients through lung function testing and communicates results to medical staff. Conducts oxygen assessments and recommends suitable oxygen therapy. Performs sleep monitoring studies. Obtains electrocardiograms across the hospital during off-hours and promptly reports any critical cardiac irregularities to the appropriate staff.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES AND RESPONSIBILITIES REQUIRING SPECIALIZED TRAINING, SKILL, AND EXPERIENCE

Airway Management: Conducts permanent tracheostomy changes, including tracheal lavage and appropriate suctioning. Arterial Line Insertions: In critical situations, under the supervision of an ICU physician or anesthetist, inserts arterial lines for blood gas sampling and frequent respiratory status assessments. Air and Ground Ambulance Transports: Maintains ventilator function during transport, employing necessary techniques for patient safety. Weaning and Extubation: Oversees the process of weaning patients from ventilators and removing endotracheal tubes, monitoring stability throughout. Hemodynamic Monitoring: Possesses comprehensive knowledge of hemodynamic monitoring practices. Respiratory Mechanics: Applies respiratory mechanics analysis for all patients on mechanical ventilation. Equipment: Proficient in using blood gas analyzers, pulmonary function analyzers, volume ventilators, end-tidal CO2 monitors, pulse oximeters, oxygen analyzers, pressure alarms, and sleep monitoring devices.
