Job Overview

The Newcastle Genetics Laboratory is an integral part of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub, collaborating with esteemed partners. We are currently seeking qualified Clinical Scientists to enhance our dedicated laboratory teams. This role presents a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge genomic research and contribute significantly to patient care.

Candidates are expected to be State Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council or to obtain State Registration within the first year of employment. Full assimilation onto Band 7 will necessitate State Registration, with initial appointments at a reduced percentage of Band 7 for those not yet registered. Applicants should possess direct experience in a diagnostic genetics service.

We are open to considering candidates with alternative qualifications, such as an MSc or PhD in Genetics, coupled with substantial laboratory and analytical experience in a clinical environment. Successful candidates who are not yet registered will be expected to pursue HCPC registration while being compensated at an appropriate percentage of the salary for fully qualified personnel during their training period.

Key Responsibilities

Our laboratory provides comprehensive testing for a diverse range of inherited and acquired conditions, serving a local population exceeding three million, as well as offering specialized services nationally and internationally. The Newcastle Genetics Laboratory is located in state-of-the-art facilities and collaborates closely with leading academic groups within the Institute of Genetic Medicine.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive and dependable professional, joining a team of approximately 90 scientific and technical staff. Responsibilities will include coordinating testing for various genetic conditions, preparing detailed reports, and maintaining close communication with clinical colleagues and Genetic Technologist staff. A solid understanding of diagnostic genetics, along with strong communication, teamwork, and supervisory skills, is essential.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the scientific and clinical aspects of the disorders tested in the laboratory.
  • Excellent laboratory skills and proficiency in communication and organization.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Prior experience as a pre-registration scientist in a diagnostic cytogenetics and/or molecular genetics laboratory.
  • A first or second class BSc degree in a relevant subject with a strong genetics focus.
  • State registration as a clinical scientist in Genetics with the Health and Care Professions Council.
