About Our Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Labour Standards Officer 3 to join our team at The Government of Nova Scotia. As a key member of our Labour Standards Division, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with our legislation and regulations.

Primary Accountabilities
  • Effectively manage a caseload of complex files, ensuring timely and efficient resolution of disputes and compliance issues.
  • Facilitate the settlement of disputes between parties, utilizing conflict resolution and mediation skills to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Conduct thorough investigations, gathering and analyzing evidence to inform findings and recommendations.
  • Make findings of fact and legal findings, issuing written reasoned decisions that are fair and impartial.
  • Enforce decisions through collection activity, as necessary, to ensure compliance with our legislation.
  • Inspect payroll records to assess compliance with our Labour Standards Code and regulations, working with employers to provide guidance and support.
Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will require a bachelor's degree plus 5 years of relevant experience. An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.

You will bring direct experience interpreting and applying legislation, regulations, and/or policy, as well as proven conflict resolution skills and experience conducting complex investigations in a fair, impartial, and timely manner.

You will have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to produce excellent written analytical work. You will also possess strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information in a clear and concise manner.

You will have experience dealing with frustrated and upset individuals, with the ability to de-escalate situations by seeking to understand others' perspectives, showing empathy, and remaining calm and respectful.

You will demonstrate a strong understanding of, and commitment to, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
