The Child Development Recreation Specialist plays a vital role in fostering the growth and progress of each child at Hope's Home. Collaborating closely with fellow specialists, the Hope's Home team, external organizations, and community resources, this role is dedicated to delivering both community and in-house programming. The specialist advocates for inclusive practices within the community, connects children to their cultural roots, and cultivates an environment that encourages learning, individuality, and personal development. This position reports to the Supportive Living Manager or the Nurse Supervisor, depending on the location.

Key Responsibilities.

Operational Duties.

Facilitate communication and arrange family visits to strengthen relationships between children and their families. Maintain and update personal care logs. Collaborate with the leadership team to develop a menu approved by a licensed dietitian. Create and revise Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIP) as necessary. Make referrals to therapeutic professionals as needed. Provide insights on therapies that would benefit each child. Schedule and attend all therapeutic appointments (e.g., CNIB, Speech and Language, Teachers). Document therapeutic appointments and share outcomes with staff. Oversee and maintain adaptive equipment; arrange for maintenance as required. Manage inventory of therapeutic equipment. Plan, instruct, and implement daily programming, posting activities at the start of each month. Adapt program activities to incorporate Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Speech therapy programming. Assess each child's cultural, recreational, and personal needs while managing associated budgets. Identify and arrange recreational activities for each child (e.g., swimming, cultural dance). Create an environment that fosters the development of physical, emotional, social, communicative, cognitive, and creative skills while ensuring safety and well-being. Conduct weekly inventory of personal care supplies and procure clothing and personal items for each child. Arrange transportation for children to various locations. Complete quarterly assessments for discussion with relevant professionals. Document developmental goals set by the healthcare team and review progress with staff. Complete forms and assessments as requested by supporting professionals. Act as a liaison between healthcare professionals and staff working with the child. Collaborate with the support team (Rehabilitation Centers, nurses, teachers, etc.) to develop programs and activities that align with personal development goals. Document communication with and visits by the child's family. Maintain daily communication with daycare and schools through various platforms. Plan and execute special events (e.g., holidays, birthdays). Provide backup support to Developmental Workers and One-to-One Behavioral Support positions. Assist on the floor as needed and provide personal care. Attend regular team meetings with leadership and floor staff. Participate in the orientation of new staff as directed by management. Collaborate closely with other Recreation Specialists to ensure consistency in programming and address daily challenges effectively. Participate as a member of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee. Engage in ongoing professional development and training. Purchase groceries and prepare meals.

Supervisory Duties.

Directly communicate daily activities and requirements to floor staff. Train and support Developmental Workers, monitoring their performance. Provide guidance to floor staff regarding workplace challenges. Educate staff on the proper use of adaptive equipment and therapies. Instruct staff on safely securing children in accessible vehicles. Support staff in implementing behavioral support plans.

Occupational Health and Safety.

Foster a psychologically safe work environment, resolving conflicts respectfully and ensuring fair resolutions. Complete all required Occupational Health and Safety training. Monitor and address any safety hazards in the workplace.

Qualifications.

Minimum Grade 12 education required. Recreational Therapy Diploma or Early Childhood Education III Certification is an asset. Relevant experience and knowledge are beneficial, including supervisory experience, kinesiology background, and familiarity with therapies. Experience working with children with complex medical and developmental needs. Knowledge of recreation program planning and adaptive equipment. Training in the MANDT System, Transfer, Lifting, and Repositioning (TLR), Sign Language, and Back to Basics is advantageous. A valid driver's license is required.

Skills and Competencies.

Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership capabilities. Ability to work effectively with children of diverse ages and abilities. Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively. Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) with staff, caregivers, and external agencies. Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to observe and accurately assess children, the environment, and program effectiveness. High attention to detail. Flexibility and adaptability to changes in the work environment.

Working Conditions.

Availability to work 40 hours per week; shifts may include weekends. Set shifts with varying start and end times. Physically capable of working with individuals of varying sizes. Frequent position changes throughout the day (sitting, standing, kneeling, etc.). Exposure to cleaning chemicals and bodily fluids. Fast-paced and noisy work environment. Experience working with adaptive equipment and technologies. Outdoor work with children in various weather conditions.
