Child Development Recreation Specialist

Job Overview.

The Child Development Recreation Specialist plays a vital role in fostering the growth and enrichment of children at Hope's Home. Collaborating closely with fellow specialists, the Hope's Home team, external organizations, and community resources, this position is responsible for delivering both community-based and in-house programming. The specialist advocates for inclusivity within the community, connects children to their cultural roots, and cultivates an environment that encourages learning, individuality, and personal growth. This role reports to the Supportive Living Manager or the Nurse Supervisor, depending on the specific location.

Key Responsibilities.

Operational Duties.

  • Facilitate family visits to strengthen relationships between children and their families.
  • Maintain and update personal care logs.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to develop a menu approved by a licensed dietitian.
  • Create and revise Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) as necessary.
  • Make referrals to therapeutic professionals and provide input on beneficial therapies for each child.
  • Schedule and attend therapeutic appointments, documenting outcomes for staff communication.
  • Oversee and maintain adaptive equipment, ensuring it is in good working order.
  • Plan and implement daily programming, adapting activities to incorporate various therapies.
  • Assess each child's cultural, recreational, and personal needs while managing budgets effectively.
  • Organize recreational activities and ensure a safe, nurturing environment for skill development.
  • Conduct inventory of personal care supplies and procure necessary items for each child.
  • Arrange transportation for children to various activities.
  • Participate in quarterly assessments and collaborate with the child's healthcare team.
  • Document developmental goals and progress, acting as a liaison between healthcare professionals and staff.
  • Communicate with daycare and schools using various applications.
  • Plan and execute special events throughout the year.
  • Provide support on the floor as needed, including personal care tasks.
  • Attend regular team meetings and assist in training new staff as directed.
  • Collaborate with fellow Recreation Programmers to ensure consistent programming and address challenges.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Manage grocery purchases and meal preparation.

Supervisory Duties.

  • Direct daily activities and requirements to floor staff.
  • Train and support Developmental Workers, providing guidance on challenges.
  • Educate staff on the use of adaptive equipment and safety protocols.

Health and Safety Responsibilities.

  • Foster a psychologically safe work environment by resolving conflicts respectfully.
  • Complete all required Occupational Health and Safety training.
  • Monitor and address safety hazards in the workplace.

Qualifications.

  • Minimum Grade 12 education required.
  • Recreational Therapy Diploma or Early Childhood Education III Certification is an asset.
  • Relevant experience in supervisory roles, kinesiology, or working with children with complex needs is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Working Conditions.

  • Availability to work 40 hours per week, including 10 or 12-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physically capable of handling varying weights and performing diverse physical tasks.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and bodily fluids in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Wage: $21.51 to $29.10/hr
