The Child Development Recreation Specialist plays a vital role in fostering the growth and enrichment of children at Hope's Home. This role reports to the Supportive Living Manager or the Nurse Supervisor, depending on the specific location.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Duties

  • Facilitate family visits to strengthen relationships between children and their families.
  • Maintain and update personal care logs.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to design a menu approved by a licensed dietitian.
  • Develop and revise Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) as necessary.
  • Refer children to therapeutic professionals as needed.
  • Provide insights on therapies that would benefit each child.
  • Schedule and attend therapeutic appointments, documenting outcomes for staff.
  • Oversee the maintenance and inventory of adaptive equipment.
  • Plan and implement daily programming, posting activities at the start of each month.
  • Adapt activities to incorporate various therapies, ensuring a holistic approach.
  • Assess each child's cultural, recreational, and personal needs while managing associated budgets.
  • Organize recreational activities for children and facilitate their participation.
  • Create a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the development of physical, emotional, social, communicative, cognitive, and creative skills.
  • Conduct weekly inventory of personal care supplies and procure necessary items.
  • Arrange transportation for children to various activities.
  • Complete quarterly assessments for discussion with relevant professionals.
  • Document developmental goals set by healthcare teams and review progress with staff.
  • Act as a liaison between healthcare professionals and staff.
  • Collaborate with support teams to develop programs that meet personal development goals.
  • Document family communications for professional review.
  • Maintain daily communication with daycare and schools.
  • Plan and execute special events throughout the year.
  • Provide support to Developmental Workers and Behavioral Support positions as needed.
  • Assist with personal care and support on the floor as required.
  • Attend regular team meetings and participate in staff orientation as directed.
  • Work closely with other Recreation Programmers to ensure consistency in programming and address challenges collaboratively.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and training.
  • Manage grocery purchases and meal preparation.

Supervisory Duties

  • Communicate daily activity plans and requirements to floor staff.
  • Train and support Developmental Workers in their roles.
  • Provide guidance to staff regarding workplace challenges.
  • Educate staff on the use of adaptive equipment and therapies.
  • Ensure staff are trained in safe transportation practices for children.
  • Support staff in implementing behavioral support plans.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

  • Foster a psychologically safe work environment, encouraging open communication and conflict resolution.
  • Complete all required Occupational Health and Safety training.
  • Monitor and address safety hazards in the workplace.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 education is required.
  • A diploma in Recreational Therapy or Early Childhood Education III Certification is an asset.
  • Relevant experience and knowledge are beneficial, including supervisory experience, kinesiology background, and experience with children with complex needs.
  • Familiarity with recreation program planning and adaptive equipment is advantageous.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
