The School District #39 (Vancouver) is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to fill the position of Youth Engagement Specialist - Substance Use Prevention. This role is a critical part of our efforts to provide exceptional learning experiences for students and promote a culture of equity and inclusivity in our schools.
Key Responsibilities- Assess and enhance current school-based activities related to substance use prevention and intervention.
- Identify emerging issues and service gaps with respect to substance use prevention in school communities.
- Plan and provide a range of student engagement activities, including classroom activities, drug education, and brief intervention techniques.
- Apply progressive and age-appropriate approaches to substance use prevention and health promotion in school-aged youth.
- Foster leadership potential within youth and engage them in establishing school-based youth action teams.
- Support and encourage youth to voice their perspectives on substance use issues through activities such as parent and student workshops.
- Work collaboratively with youth, parents, school staff, and community agencies to provide education and support on substance use prevention.
- Facilitate dialogue and provide education to teachers, parents, and the wider community on youth substance use-related issues.
- Expedite and encourage partnerships with community agencies and community groups to support substance use prevention efforts.
- Assist students who require developmental, behavioral, and/or multicultural support.
- Prepare and maintain various charts, records, and reports.
- Completion of grade 12 plus 2 years of full-time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a diploma in a relevant field, such as psychology, sociology, social work, or education.
- Minimum 2 years of experience conducting substance use education and prevention.
- Experience in an educational setting is an asset.
- Sound knowledge of developmental psychology and the ability to assess the behavior and needs of school students with substance use and/or behavioral issues.
- Ability to effectively intervene in crisis situations relating to students and advise and support students individually and in groups.
- Knowledge and experience in delivering information on substance use prevention and intervention activities and strategies.
- Ability to develop and implement strength-based client-centered prevention programs.
- Willingness to travel throughout the district and work irregular hours as needed.
- A competitive hourly rate of $38.05/hour (7 hours/day, 5 days/week) plus a comprehensive benefits package.
