We are in search of a Senior Software Engineering Director to become an integral part of our expanding organization. This prominent role will involve providing both technical and personnel leadership for a diverse software engineering team. The successful candidate will actively participate in discussions surrounding the Nautilus software architecture, scalability, and long-term vision, while also overseeing the design and execution of the real-time control software that operates our instruments, extracting precise signals from acquired image data. Given that our innovative proteomic technology is still in its early stages, this position offers the opportunity to make a substantial and meaningful impact on our technology and the company's trajectory toward future achievements.

This role will report directly to the Senior VP of Product Development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, hands-on technical and personnel leadership for the Instrument Control software team.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop multiple teams of software engineers with varying levels of experience and areas of expertise.
  • Ensure the successful delivery of all software components necessary for the launch of the Voyager instrument as part of the broader Nautilus proteomic platform.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with representatives from various disciplines—such as Bioinformatics, Biology, and Hardware Engineering—to establish your teams' direction, strategy, and priorities.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary software engineering projects to effectively deliver outcomes to both external and internal clients.
  • Contribute hands-on technical expertise to our Instrument Control software engineering initiatives.
  • As a member of the leadership team, contribute to corporate strategy and initiatives, serve as a positive cultural role model, and act as an ambassador for Nautilus.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant experience in a high-performing software engineering environment, particularly within the biotech and life sciences sectors, including 7+ years in a leadership capacity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success in leading multiple software teams through complex projects across all stages of the development lifecycle, resulting in the successful launch of various products.
  • Expertise in creating and nurturing high-performing software teams through coaching, hiring, performance evaluations, technical mentorship, and other leadership strategies.
  • Proficiency in a broad range of programming concepts, tools, environments (such as FreeRTOS, Linux, Windows, and cloud), and languages (notably C/C++ and Python), with the ability to quickly learn new topics as required.
  • Experience with multiple real-time or instrument control systems that have been successfully deployed to external clients.
  • Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and project management skills, along with a readiness to assist wherever necessary.
