Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Nautilus Biotechnology Full time

At Nautilus Biotechnology, we are driven by a significant mission: to enhance the health of millions by unlocking the potential of the proteome, thereby accelerating drug development and paving the way for a new era of precision and personalized medicine. We are creating a groundbreaking single-molecule protein analysis platform characterized by unparalleled sensitivity, scale, and user-friendliness, which we believe will democratize access to the proteome – a vital and dynamic source of biological insight.

We are in search of an Associate Director of Software Engineering to become a pivotal part of our expanding organization. This prominent role requires a candidate who will offer both technical expertise and leadership to a diverse software engineering team. The individual will actively participate in discussions regarding the Nautilus software architecture, scalability, and long-term vision, while also being accountable for the design and execution of the real-time control software that powers our instruments, extracting precise signals from captured image data. Given that our innovative proteomic technology is still in its early development stages, this position offers the opportunity for significant impact on our technology and the company's trajectory towards future achievements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, hands-on technical and leadership guidance for the Instrument Control software team.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop multiple teams of software engineers with varying levels of experience and areas of expertise.
  • Ensure the successful delivery of all software components necessary for the deployment of the Voyager instrument as part of the broader Nautilus proteomic platform.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with representatives from various disciplines, including Bioinformatics, Biology, and Hardware Engineering, to define team direction, strategy, and priorities.
  • Lead multi-disciplinary software engineering projects to successfully deliver outcomes to both external and internal stakeholders.
  • Contribute hands-on technical expertise to our Instrument Control software engineering initiatives.
  • As a member of the leadership team, contribute to corporate strategy and initiatives, serve as a positive cultural role model, and act as an ambassador for Nautilus.

Qualifications

  • Over 15 years of relevant experience in a high-performing software engineering environment, particularly within the biotech and life sciences sectors, including more than 7 years in a leadership capacity.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • A proven history of leading software teams to success on complex projects throughout all phases of the development lifecycle, resulting in multiple products successfully delivered to customers.
  • Ability to create and foster high-performing software teams through effective coaching, hiring, performance evaluations, technical mentorship, and other leadership strategies.
  • Proficiency in a wide range of programming concepts, tools, environments (such as FreeRTOS, Linux, Windows, and cloud), and languages (notably C/C++ and Python), with the capability to quickly gain expertise in new areas as required.
  • Experience with multiple real-time or instrument control systems that have been successfully implemented for external clients.
  • Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and project management skills, coupled with a readiness to assist wherever necessary.
  • A trusted leader within the organization, capable of leading both directly and through collaboration and influence.
  • A passion for building complex systems that address significant, novel challenges while working alongside experts from diverse disciplines.

Nautilus Team Culture

  • We are curious go-getters: a team of lifelong learners who embrace big challenges while continuously striving for improvement.
  • We are detail-oriented: we achieve excellence in science by working smartly and diligently, learning from our experiences.
  • We are collaborative: we foster a workplace where everyone feels respected and valued, encouraging open sharing of perspectives.
