Job Title: Accounting Clerk 1 - Receptionist/Cashier

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accounting Clerk 1 - Receptionist/Cashier to join our team at the Municipality of North Cowichan. As a key member of our front counter team, you will provide exceptional customer service, manage cash and financial transactions, and perform various administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent customer service to the public, responding to inquiries and resolving issues in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Manage cash and financial transactions, including handling cash, operating a point-of-sale system, and processing payments.
  • Perform various administrative tasks, such as data entry, filing, and record-keeping.
  • Assist with accounting functions, including basic bookkeeping, accounts receivable, and accounts payable.
  • Operate a variety of software applications, including Microsoft Office and land management/utility/property tax software.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, providing support to colleagues and contributing to a positive and productive work atmosphere.
Requirements:
  • Completion of Grade 12 and formal training in basic bookkeeping.
  • Three (3) years of related office and clerical experience, including an ability to undertake basic accounting functions.
  • A minimum keyboarding speed of 60 wpm and the ability to work within a current Windows environment.
  • Demonstrable written and oral communication skills, public relations skills, and practical problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrable understanding of property tax, tax deferment, utility billing, accounts receivable, business and dog licensing administration.
  • Demonstrable understanding of accounting principles.
  • Ability to perform cashiering duties.
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks in a demanding multi-faceted environment.
  • Ability to work with co-workers and members of the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Independence of judgment and capability of working with minimal supervision.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License.

This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website.
