Job Summary:

The Fitness Instructor is responsible for leading fitness classes to clients under the direction of the Program coordinator and/or Physiotherapist (PT) associated with the program and in line with the certification standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads fitness classes to promote physical activity and well-being among clients.
  • Works collaboratively with the Program coordinator and/or Physiotherapist to develop and implement fitness programs that meet the needs of clients.
  • Participates in ongoing review and evaluation of service delivery processes to ensure high-quality care.
  • Attends educational in-services and training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • May provide education on fall prevention and other health-related topics as directed by the Program coordinator and/or regulated professionals.
  • Reports any situations that may impact client safety or well-being to the Program coordinator and/or Physiotherapist.
  • Ensures accurate and timely reporting of incidents and near misses in accordance with VON policies and procedures.
  • Reports any equipment defects or maintenance needs to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Functions and reports in compliance with OHS legislation, regulations, and VON policies and procedures.

External and Internal Relationships:

  • Frequent interaction with Program coordinators, Physiotherapists, and clients to ensure effective communication and collaboration.

Education, Designations, and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • CCAA Certification as a Seniors Fitness Instructor and/or equivalent is required at the time of hire or within 3 months from time of hire.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching group fitness classes for older adults, including experience teaching specialized classes for chronic conditions.
  • Experience promoting health and well-being through physical activity.
  • Experience working in an assisted living environment, such as recreation therapy, is an asset.
  • Bilingual in French/English is an asset.

  • Ability to remain calm and composed in unexpected situations.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team to achieve program goals.

Other:

  • Must have access to a personal vehicle for business use and possess a current driver's license and proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Current criminal background check, including a vulnerable sector screen, is required.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed.

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:

  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate reporting and documentation.
  • Lift and carry using appropriate lifting techniques to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Bend, push, pull, grip, reach, kneel, crouch using good body mechanics to perform job duties.
  • Walk, sit, stand, climb stairs to move around the work environment.
  • Hand movements to perform tasks and interact with clients.
