Position Overview:

The University of Toronto is seeking an experienced and dedicated Adjunct Faculty Member to contribute to the academic excellence of the Faculty of Arts & Science. This role involves teaching a course focused on the dynamics of Asia within the context of the contemporary global economy.

Course Information:

Course Title: CAS420H1F: Asia and the New Global Economy

Course Synopsis: This course investigates the emergence of Asia and its role in the modern global economy, addressing themes such as labor dynamics, capitalism, knowledge economies, economic nationalism, social inequality, gender issues, and the implications for democracy. The curriculum will encompass a broad geographical scope, including East, Southeast, and South Asia.

Estimated Class Size: 27 students

Class Schedule: Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM

Delivery Method: Currently in-person, subject to change based on institutional guidelines.

Appointment Duration: September to December 2024

Compensation: The salary structure is as follows: Sessional Lecturer I (SL I): $9,457.90; Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term (SL I -LT): $9,930.79; Sessional Lecturer II (SL II): $10,121.77; Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term (SL II -LT): $10,326.62; Sessional Lecturer III (SL III): $10,362.76; Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term (SL III – LT): $10,

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements: A completed PhD in Anthropology, History, Sociology, Asian Studies, Geography, or related fields is essential. A robust scholarly background in relevant disciplines is required, along with a strong commitment to teaching.

Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching and a deep understanding of the subject matter is preferred. Previous experience in delivering similar courses is advantageous.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing the course syllabus and assessment criteria
  • Conducting weekly lectures and engaging students
  • Creating and grading assignments, tests, and exams in accordance with university regulations
  • Managing the course site on the learning management system
  • Submitting final grades
  • Holding office hours for student consultations
  • Addressing student inquiries and appeals
  • Supervising and mentoring teaching assistants

Preference will be given to qualified individuals who have advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with the collective agreement provisions.
