Senior Consultant, Environmental Impact Analysis

ERM Group is in search of a seasoned Managing Consultant to significantly contribute to the expansion of our operations. This role can be based in our Calgary office or fulfilled remotely within the region. The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in overseeing wetland and biological field evaluations, as well as permitting initiatives associated with renewable energy and infrastructure projects. Experience in solar projects is highly desirable.
As a pivotal technical leader and project manager, you will be responsible for managing permitting and due diligence processes, providing guidance in biological field surveys, conducting research to clarify permitting prerequisites, liaising with relevant authorities throughout the permitting phases, formulating permitting strategies, and coordinating permit submissions. Additionally, you will engage in teams executing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, state-level equivalent assessments, and environmental permitting for large-scale capital initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Oversee and deliver technical expertise on wetland delineations, habitat evaluations, and species-specific surveys. Preference will be given to candidates with federal bat biologist permits.
- Lead the development of local, state, and federal permitting documentation. Participate in the preparation of permitting deliverables, assuming roles from lead technical expert to quality reviewer. Engage in project delivery tasks such as report generation, data collection, field surveys, literature review, and formulating recommendations for clients.
- Manage multiple projects while adhering to client scope, budget, and schedule expectations, ensuring quality standards are met for all project outputs.
- Draft technical proposals, including the formulation of technical scopes and cost assessments, while participating in business development efforts with existing clients and potential leads. Foster client relationships to encourage repeat business.
- Collaborate with other ERM Impact Assessment and Permitting (IAP) professionals to execute IAP projects, which encompass environmental impact assessments, land use planning, facility siting, permitting, and risk assessments.
- Supervise junior and mid-level consulting personnel to enhance their skills in technical planning and permitting.
- Stay informed about ongoing and upcoming projects in the broader region to assist with staff coordination and identify staffing requirements.
- Comprehend ERM's service offerings and market strategy, participating in recruitment and interview processes to cultivate a robust and cohesive regional team.
- Establish strong collaborative relationships with ERM colleagues locally, regionally, and nationally.
- BS/MS in biology, ecology, or environmental sciences.
- 5 to 10 years of experience in due diligence and permitting, particularly in consulting for private-sector clients.
- High level of technical proficiency and extensive knowledge of biological field assessment and permitting practices, with a solid understanding of key biological impact assessment and management issues related to land development projects.
- Strong team-building and influencing capabilities; integrity; and the experience and confidence to effectively address client and business challenges.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with major clients.
- Demonstrated capacity to work seamlessly as part of a team.
- Exceptional writing, communication, presentation, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills.
- Recognized technical expertise and established reputation in the local market, including the ability to cultivate a positive rapport with local land use authorities.
- Positive attitude, collaborative spirit, and commitment to the success of ERM as a global entity.
