Overview
The City of Vancouver is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the community we serve. We are seeking an Engineering Design Assistant to play a vital role in our Engineering Services department.
Main Responsibilities
The Engineering Design Assistant collaborates with a team to evaluate, process, design, and manage permits for commercial and residential sewer and water connections. This role also provides essential support to applicants navigating the connection permit process.
Key Duties
- Manage the intake, assessment, design, and issuance of sewer and water connection permits.
- Conduct engineering calculations, develop preliminary designs, and suggest installation solutions for service connection projects.
- Review inspection records, including CCTV footage, to inform design and installation of service connections.
- Coordinate survey activities for the construction layout of connection installations.
- Collaborate with Sewer Operations staff to generate cost estimates for public sewer connections serving commercial projects.
- Assist applicants, consultants, and contractors with their servicing requirements for both commercial and residential developments.
- Research and provide technical insights regarding sewer and water infrastructure to the public.
- Address general inquiries related to sewer servicing from the public and external agencies.
- Offer technical support to various branches and departments concerning service connection installations.
- Adhere to existing policies, procedures, and regulations governing sewer and water permits and connections.
- Maintain accurate records and files while performing additional technical duties as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Completion of a technical program in applied sciences, along with significant relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in municipal infrastructure and construction is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of civil, mechanical, and piping drafting, along with mechanical and piping layout.
- Strong understanding of engineering mathematics and familiarity with engineering practices.
- Proficient in standard engineering terminology.
- Knowledge of surveying methods and techniques, with relevant field experience.
- Solid understanding of municipal design principles, inspection protocols, construction methods, and materials.
- Familiarity with City computer systems such as ePlan, POSSE, Hansen, Topobase, Word, and Excel.
- Experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D is an asset.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to build and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Capability to interpret engineering drawings and perform design drafting.
- Aptitude for conducting complex technical and mathematical computations.
- Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks.
- Competence in providing accurate information to the public.
- Ability to assess work methods and recommend improvements.
Work Environment
The City of Vancouver offers a Flexible Work Program, allowing eligible staff to work remotely from locations within a reasonable commuting distance from their designated worksite.
