Job Overview

Under the supervision of the Department Manager, the Community Mental Health Worker plays a vital role in providing housing and support services. This position is essential in assisting clients to enter, sustain, and transition from supported independent living.

Work Schedule:

Seeking casual Community Mental Health Workers available for day, afternoon, and night shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the execution of programs, including leisure activities, cooking, and housekeeping, by engaging clients in daily life skills.
  • Delivers community-based psychosocial rehabilitation services by identifying and aiding clients in accessing community programs and resources.
  • Educates and demonstrates life skills and strategies necessary for self-care, independent living, and interaction with external social services.
  • Employs effective communication strategies, including role modeling, to establish a collaborative relationship with clients.
  • Provides support and information to help clients enhance self-esteem and develop decision-making abilities through various techniques.
  • Assists clients in identifying and accessing both formal and informal community support systems, including leisure, vocational, and educational services.
  • Monitors and documents clients' physical and mental health status, taking appropriate actions as needed.
  • Advocates for clients to uphold their rights and dignity.
  • Collaborates professionally with clients, colleagues, supervisors, other agencies, and family members.
  • Develops personalized life skills programs with clients, involving family, friends, and community resources when appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with all administrative tasks and the QWIK process within designated timeframes.
  • Utilizes formal and informal assessment methods, such as interviews, to create individualized plans that identify clients' interests and needs.
  • Safely administers medications in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the implementation of maintenance, housekeeping, and cooking tasks associated with the program.
  • Identifies and addresses health and safety concerns as they arise.
  • Completes assigned administrative tasks and maintains required records.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, which may include directing students and volunteers.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Community Social Service or a relevant combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability to provide or obtain necessary certifications upon hire, including First Aid + CPR, WHMIS, and FoodSafe, as well as clearances for Criminal Record, TB, and Immunization Records (including Covid-19 vaccination status).

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of housing issues and local community resources.
  • Strong grasp of harm reduction approaches and their application in community settings.
  • Proven crisis de-escalation skills in team environments.
  • Experience working with marginalized individuals at risk of homelessness.
  • Ability to support individuals with substance misuse issues and untreated mental health conditions.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles.
  • Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation practices and program policies.
  • Proficiency in relevant software applications.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Skill in observing and recognizing changes in clients.
  • Experience facilitating group activities.
  • Basic understanding of the criminal justice system.
