Job Summary

Osler is seeking a highly skilled Patent Agent to join our Intellectual Property group in Ottawa. As a Patent Agent, you will play a key role in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, primarily in relation to pharmaceutical, biochemical, or software/computer-related technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in the relevant technical area
  • Provide exceptional client service and manage client relationships
  • Coordinate worldwide prosecution of patent portfolios
  • Stay up-to-date with recent Canadian Patent Law changes and Canadian patent practice
  • Collaborate with internal teams to deliver high-quality work products
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of life sciences, software, and computer-related technologies

Requirements

  • Registered Canadian Patent Agent in good standing with the College of Patent Agents & Trademark Agents (CPATA)
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience drafting patent applications in the relevant technical area
  • Advanced degree (M.Sc., preferably Ph.D.) in life sciences, with chemistry preferred, or electrical engineering, computer sciences, or software engineering
  • Excellent knowledge of Canadian patent practice and recent Canadian Patent Law changes
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
  • Superior time-management and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Team player with a commitment to delivering high-quality work products
