About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Tax Specialist to join our team at TransAlta. As a key member of our Corporate Tax department, you will play a pivotal role in leading and advising on US tax matters, ensuring compliance with tax regulations, and optimizing tax strategies to support our business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the preparation and review of US federal, state, and local tax returns, including cross-border tax compliance filings.
  • Prepare and review US tax provisions and analysis under IFRS for financial reporting purposes, including deferred taxes, uncertain tax provisions, valuation allowances, and financial statement tax note disclosure.
  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax positions.
  • Provide US tax advice and support with business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings, and domestic or cross-border financing.
  • Monitor and analyze changes in tax legislation and assess the potential impact on the company.
  • Manage and coordinate tax audits and inquiries by federal, state, and local tax authorities.
  • Prepare and present responses to tax notices and audit findings.
  • Work closely with the Finance, Legal, and Business Development teams to provide tax insights and support on various projects and initiatives.
  • Assist in US tax forecasting and modeling of cash tax horizon.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal tax policies and procedures.
  • Provide training and guidance to junior tax staff and other departments on US tax-related matters.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • CPA designation or equivalent is preferred.
  • Master's degree in US tax or equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of relevant tax experience, preferably in a US corporate tax environment or public accounting firm.
  • Extensive experience with US federal, state, and local tax compliance and reporting.
  • Proven track record of successful tax planning and advisory work.
  • In-depth knowledge of US tax laws and regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in tax software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive and results-oriented mindset.
