About the Role
As a Tax Specialist at TransAlta, you will play a critical role in managing the company's tax compliance and planning strategies. This includes preparing and reviewing tax returns, analyzing tax provisions, and developing tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the preparation and review of U.S. federal, state, and local tax returns, including cross-border tax compliance filings.
- Prepare and review U.S. tax provisions and analysis under IFRS for financial reporting purposes, including deferred taxes, uncertain tax provisions, and financial statement tax note disclosure.
- Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize tax positions.
- Provide U.S. tax advice and support with business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings, and domestic or cross-border financing.
- Monitor and analyze changes in tax legislation and assess the potential impact on the company.
- Manage and coordinate tax audits and inquiries by federal, state, and local tax authorities.
- Prepare and present responses to tax notices and audit findings.
- Work closely with the Finance, Legal, and Business Development teams to provide tax insights and support on various projects and initiatives.
- Assist in U.S. tax forecasting and modeling of cash tax horizon.
- Assist in the development and implementation of internal tax policies and procedures.
- Provide training and guidance to junior tax staff and other departments on U.S. tax-related matters.
- Experience with Advance Pricing Arrangements and Tax Equity Partnership Financing is considered a plus.
