Job Title: Director, UBC Press

The University of British Columbia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director to lead its prestigious publishing house, UBC Press. As the Director, you will be responsible for overseeing the strategic and operational planning of the Press, ensuring the publication of high-quality scholarly works, and promoting the University's reputation as a pre-eminent global research institution.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to advance the Press's publishing program and achieve its goals.
  • Oversee the editorial direction of UBC Press, working closely with the Assistant Director, Acquisitions, and the acquisitions team.
  • Make final decisions on publication of all works, considering financial implications, intellectual quality, and potential contribution to the Press's reputation.
  • Uphold Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonization (EDID) as essential bedrock to the Press's publishing program.
  • Ensure timely production of published works, meeting high standards of editorial, design, and production quality.
  • Anticipate and explore innovative digital publishing models in scholarly communications.
  • Represent the University at scholarly and publishing associations, and participate in forums exploring digital initiatives.
  • Lead an inclusive staff team, responsible for human resources matters, including recruitment, professional development, and performance issues.
  • Implement the University's Inclusion Action Plan (IAP) and Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP) within the UBC Press.
  • Oversee the full range of UBC Press operations to meet budgetary goals, including financial planning and analysis.
Requirements:
  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of fourteen years of comprehensive experience in book publishing, with at least three to five years of experience in a management position.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives and demonstrate a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in strategic and operational planning, administration, and program management.
  • Thorough knowledge of funding programs supporting book publishing, including The Canada Book Fund and Livres Canada Books.
  • Sound knowledge of current book business models for print and digital editions, and demonstrated interest in exploring new publishing-related technologies and models.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated success in working with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Impeccable verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver complicated information with tact and nuance.
